Full job description
Make a Difference, One Repair at a Time
The On-Call Facilities Maintenance Person position at St. Francis Center is a unique opportunity to use practical repair skills in service of a mission-centered community. This role is ideal for someone with general maintenance experience, a flexible schedule, and a steady, respectful approach to working in residential settings.
As an On-Call Facilities Maintenance Person, you will help keep St. Francis Center’s housing sites safe, clean, functional, and welcoming for residents in Permanent Supportive Housing. This position supports basic building and unit needs, including routine maintenance requests, minor plumbing stoppages, light fixture replacement, light painting, lock and door hardware replacement, unit touch-ups, and other general repairs that do not require a licensed contractor.
At SFC, maintenance is more than fixing what is broken. It is part of creating stable homes where residents are treated with dignity, respect, and care.
**
St. Francis Center (SFC), a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado, was established in June 1983. SFC is a refuge for adults who are homeless in the metro Denver area. Our programs and services focus on daytime shelter, social services, health and wellness, housing, employment, and outreach. At the SFC Day Center, guests have the opportunity to work with a variety of specialists, depending on their individual needs, which is often the first step toward transformation and ultimately self-sufficiency. At our permanent supportive housing sites, we focus on helping residents remain stable in their housing by providing trauma-informed case management and connecting them to resources in the wider community.
POSITION OVERVIEW
This On-Call position provides as-needed facilities maintenance support for St. Francis Center’s Housing Department. The work site may vary among SFC’s permanent supportive housing locations. Shifts and assignments will be based on maintenance needs, unit needs, staff capacity, and urgent repair requests.
This role is intended for general, non-licensed repair and maintenance work. The On-Call Facilities Maintenance Person is not expected to perform work that requires a licensed plumber, electrician, HVAC technician, or other licensed trade professional. This position is expected to recognize when a repair falls outside the scope of the role and promptly communicate those needs to the appropriate supervisor.
HOUSING FACILITIES MAINTENANCE
On-call facilities maintenance shifts are designed to provide practical, timely support for SFC housing sites. Duties may include responding to assigned maintenance requests, completing basic repairs, supporting unit readiness, helping address safety concerns, and maintaining respectful communication with residents, staff, and vendors.
Examples of work may include basic plumbing support such as clearing routine fixture stoppages, replacing toilet seats or flush handles, addressing minor leaks within skill level, replacing light bulbs or simple fixtures within appropriate safety limits, light painting, patching, touch-up work, replacing locks, doorknobs, handles, and other door hardware, assisting with unit turnover tasks, and completing other basic maintenance needs as assigned.
JOB EXPECTATIONS
Other duties may be assigned.
Maintain high standards of safety, resident care, and respectful conduct while working in SFC housing sites.
Respond to assigned maintenance requests in a timely and professional manner.
Perform basic, non-licensed repairs in resident units, common areas, offices, restrooms, and building spaces.
Support routine plumbing needs, such as clearing minor fixture stoppages and identifying issues that require a licensed vendor.
Replace or repair basic door hardware, locks, handles, cabinet hardware, and other small fixtures.
Complete light painting, patching, wall touch-ups, and basic cosmetic repairs.
Replace light bulbs, covers, and simple fixtures with the worker’s skill level.
Assist with preparing units or rooms for occupancy when needed.
Identify and report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, supply needs, pest concerns, water leaks, property damage, or repairs requiring vendor support.
Maintain a clean and safe work area while completing repairs.
Use tools and materials safely and appropriately.
Maintain professional boundaries with residents, guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors.
Communicate clearly with Housing and Facilities leadership regarding availability, assigned shifts, repair status, barriers, and completed work.
Follow documentation expectations, including work order notes, incident communication, supply receipts, and other required paperwork.
Protect resident privacy and maintain confidentiality.
Work in a trauma-informed and respectful manner with people who may be experiencing stress, disability, behavioral health symptoms, substance use, housing instability, or other life challenges.
Participate in SFC trainings as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS
At minimum, 1 to 2 years of experience in general maintenance, handyman work, property maintenance, housing maintenance, construction, facilities support, or a related field.
Ability to perform basic, non-licensed maintenance and repair tasks.
Comfort with common hand tools and basic power tools.
Ability to troubleshoot basic maintenance issues and know when to ask for support or refer the issue to a licensed vendor.
Ability to work respectfully with residents in a Permanent Supportive Housing environment.
Ability to work with people who may be experiencing difficult life trauma and may show signs of that trauma in their actions or communication.
Ability to remain calm, professional, and respectful when working around residents, guests, and staff.
Strong professional boundaries.
Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors, site staff, residents, and vendors.
Ability to be flexible with assignments, location, and scheduling needs.
Ability to work independently while following SFC policies and site expectations.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect resident privacy.
Ability to follow basic documentation procedures.
Ability to lift, carry, bend, kneel, climb stairs, use ladders when appropriate, and complete physical maintenance tasks safely.
Reliable transportation to travel between housing sites.
Valid Colorado driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance preferred or required based on assignment needs.
Ability to pass required background checks.
Willingness to participate in SFC trainings to support trauma-informed and respectful work in housing environments.
Basic phone, email, and work order documentation skills preferred.
Ability to provide own basic tools preferred.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$25/hour.
This is an on-call, as-needed, non-exempt position.
Hours are not guaranteed and will vary based on department needs.
This position is not eligible for benefits.
HOW TO APPLY
Qualified persons may apply by providing a résumé and three professional references to St. Francis Center. Invitations for interviews will be extended to qualified candidates upon review until the position is filled.
FRANCIS CENTER IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
St. Francis Center (SFC) strives to create a more just, diverse, equitable, and inclusive society for our community members experiencing homelessness who seek refuge with us. This begins with how we serve our guests and residents, as well as how staff, volunteers, and board members treat each other. SFC acknowledges that, as a community, we can always do better by learning from the past and by celebrating and including all voices. SFC commits to learning and growing as we strive to build a more equitable and inclusive society.
St. Francis Center, a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado, was established in June 1983 and operated from a leased building on 22nd & Lawrence streets in downtown Denver. This building quickly proved to be inadequate for the growing homeless population, and, in 1986, through a generous donation, SFC was able to purchase and renovate the 2323 Curtis Street site where we’ve been ever since.
