Job Description
Why Join Us?
At Thermo Fisher Scientific, our co-op program is designed to be a strategic pipeline for future leadership talent. Students who demonstrate exceptional performance, leadership potential, and alignment with our values will be considered for full-time opportunities during their co-op with us to begin post-graduation. These opportunities include potential placement into early career roles across the organization.
As a global company with opportunities spanning multiple businesses, functions, and locations, applicants are required to be geographically flexible and mobile for both their co-op assignment and potential future employment opportunities. Potential placement into co-op or full-time roles is based on business needs and organizational priorities at the time of selection. Onsite and in-office work is an essential function of this role and a requirement of the position.
Strategic Business Impact
For this role, projects may include the following responsibilities:
Metrology, AI & Algorithm Development — Develop new metrology methods for diverse samples and emerging customer problems; develop AI, machine learning, computer vision, image-processing, and high-throughput semiconductor metrology algorithms; perform algorithm validation, testing, and benchmarking.
Charged-Particle Optics, Modeling & Simulation — Develop and validate charged-particle optics concepts; build computational models for electron- and ion-beam systems; use Python and charged-particle simulation tools to analyze beam behavior, focusing, shaping, alignment, transport, stability, energy spread, brightness, and optical performance; correlate simulations with experimental results and improve models.
System, Source & Component Development — Design, develop, integrate, evaluate, and optimize microscopes, SEM, FIB, DualBeam systems, electron/ion sources, charged-particle optics, beam-shaping components, HVPS/high-voltage systems, vacuum systems, gas chemistry, detectors, optics, lasers, robotics, and electro-mechanical and pneumatic systems.
Experimental Research, Testing & Characterization — Plan and conduct laboratory experiments using high-voltage equipment, vacuum systems, particle sources, beam diagnostics, and specialized instrumentation; apply DoE, imaging, pyrometry, I/V measurements, noise analysis, surface analysis, and other characterization methods to evaluate alignment, focusing, shaping, stability, transport, and overall system performance.
Data Analysis & Physics-Based Modeling — Analyze experimental and system data using SPC, statistical analysis, curve fitting, regression, image processing, and quantitative methods; model thermal/electrical transport, electron emission, charged-particle behavior, and other relevant physical phenomena.
Software, Automation & Instrument Control — Develop and use Python-based software, machine learning, AutoTEM, iFast, instrument-control systems, data-acquisition tools, and automated testing/workflows to improve experimentation, microscopy, metrology, analysis, and system operation.
Engineering Optimization, Troubleshooting & Continuous Improvement — Optimize optics, sources, components, processes, and overall system performance; operate, diagnose, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair specialized equipment; apply PPI, Six Sigma, process control, benchmarking, and efficiency-improvement methods.
Customer Applications & Product Development — Partner closely with AT scientists and customers to understand emerging real-world problems, develop application and metrology solutions, provide technical support and training, gather product feedback, and translate customer needs into future technology and product development.
Technical Documentation, Research & Communication — Independently and collaboratively advance technical solutions while systematically documenting methods, workflows, models, experiments, designs, results, and project contributions; communicate findings and recommendations through reports, presentations, and design reviews.
Cross-Functional & Strategic Collaboration — Collaborate across Strategy and Centers of Excellence as well as engineering, science, manufacturing, quality, program management, finance, marketing, and leadership teams to advance research, technology, product, and business objectives.
Compensation & Relocation
Our Graduate co-ops offer an hourly rate between $32.00 dependent upon the role type and location you are supporting (aligned to respective cost-of-living guidelines). If eligible, a relocation stipend is offered in the amount of $5,000 (net). Students must be located 50+ miles away from the physical location of the internship to be eligible for the relocation stipend. Please note that students are required to have a reliable mode of transportation to and from their assigned work location for the duration of their co-op.
What We Look For
Academic Background & Work Experience:
Graduate student completing a Master's degree between December 2027 – June 2028 in one of the following fields:
Previous related co-ops, internships, and / or work experience preferred.
Leadership Profile:
Proven leadership experience through student organizations, athletics, Greek life, community service, volunteer organizations, campus programs, military service, or other leadership roles.
A track record of influencing others, leading initiatives, driving results, and creating positive impact within teams and organizations.
Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity, adapt to changing priorities, and solve complex problems.
Evidence of grit, resilience, and perseverance when facing challenges, setbacks, or competing priorities.
Strong learning agility, intellectual curiosity, and an innovative mindset.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills and emotional intelligence, with the ability to build relationships across diverse teams.
Geographic mobility and flexibility required to pursue co-op and future career opportunities in locations aligned with business needs.
Onsite and in-office work is an essential function of this role and is required throughout the program and in future placements to support collaboration across businesses, functions, and locations.
If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you!
