At Freddie Mac, our mission of Making Home Possible is what motivates us, and it’s at the core of everything we do. Since our charter in 1970, we have made home possible for more than 90 million families across the country. Join an organization where your work contributes to a greater purpose.
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Software Engineering Tech Lead to provide hands-on technical leadership for the design, delivery, and modernization of Multifamily application platforms and full-stack digital capabilities. This role will guide engineering teams in building secure, scalable, and resilient Java-based microservices solutions while partnering closely with Product Owners, engineering managers, architects, and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality business outcomes. The Tech Lead will also advance engineering maturity by promoting practical adoption of AI-assisted development lifecycle (AIDLC) practices across design, development, testing, code quality, and delivery execution.
Our Impact:
Freddie Mac's Multifamily division advances affordable rental housing by purchasing apartment loans from a national network of lenders and transforming those loans into securities that attract global investors.
The Multifamily Technology Team plays a critical role in this mission by:
Enabling Multifamily business teams to operate more efficiently through secure, scalable, and user-focused digital applications that support critical business processes across loan acquisition, asset management, securitization, risk, and portfolio operations.
Modernizing application platforms and reducing manual dependencies to improve usability, operational efficiency, scalability, reliability, and confidence in the technology capabilities that support critical Multifamily business processes.
Delivering secure, resilient, auditable, and well-architected platform capabilities that business teams can depend on to operate at scale, manage risk, meet regulatory expectations, and support long-term Multifamily growth.
Your Impact:
As a Software Engineering Tech Lead, you will guide the technical execution of modern application platform capabilities that meet evolving Multifamily business and end-user needs. You will provide hands-on directions for full-stack applications, APIs, microservices, and integration services while reinforcing engineering discipline across design, development, testing, deployment, observability, and production readiness. You will influence technical decisions, mentor developers, resolve engineering blockers, and partner with engineering managers to help teams deliver secure, reliable, and maintainable solutions.
What you will be doing:
Provide technical leadership for agile teams responsible for delivering modern full-stack application capabilities, including user-facing applications, APIs, microservices, integration services, platform modernization, and production enhancements.
Provide technical direction across squads by guiding solution design, reviewing implementation approaches, and helping teams make scalable, secure, resilient, and maintainable engineering decisions.
Partner closely with Product Owners, engineering managers, architecture, business stakeholders, and cross-functional technology teams to align technical priorities, manage dependencies, and deliver business outcomes.
Drive the design and implementation of Java-based microservices, REST APIs, front-end applications, and integration services using modern technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, AWS, Angular or React, SQL, relational databases, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing frameworks.
Create proofs of concept, demos, and prototypes to evaluate emerging technologies, validate new ideas, and accelerate adoption of modern engineering patterns and platform capabilities.
Establish and reinforce software engineering standards, including scalable design, code quality, automated testing, peer reviews, deployment discipline, application security, and operational readiness.
Ensure solutions are designed and delivered with appropriate compliance, auditability, security, resiliency, accessibility, and production support considerations.
Strengthen production support practices by improving incident triage, root-cause analysis, observability, recovery patterns, and continuous improvement of application and platform reliability.
Mentor developers through design reviews, code reviews, technical problem solving, implementation guidance, and knowledge sharing.
Promote engineering ownership, collaboration, continuous improvement, and accountability through technical influence and consistent delivery practices.
Qualifications:
8+ years of related software engineering or technology delivery experience, including demonstrated technical leadership experience guiding engineering teams through complex application delivery.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience; advanced degree preferred.
Demonstrated experience leading complex engineering initiatives across full-stack applications, APIs, microservices, platform modernization, integration services, and production enhancements.
Required hands-on or technical leadership experience with Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, microservices architecture, AWS or cloud-native application development, Angular or React, SQL, relational databases, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing frameworks.
Strong background in full-stack software engineering, application architecture, API design, enterprise integration patterns, application security, performance, resiliency, and delivery of scalable digital products for business and end-user needs.
Experience establishing and applying software engineering standards, including scalable design, code quality, automated testing, peer reviews, deployment discipline, compliance standards, auditability, and production readiness.
Proven ability to provide technical direction, evaluate solution options, guide architecture and implementation decisions, and create proofs of concept or demos to validate new ideas and emerging technologies.
Experience supporting production reliability through incident triage, root-cause analysis, observability, resiliency improvements, and operational readiness practices.
Strong technical leadership skills, including mentoring, coaching, peer review, influencing without direct authority, and helping developers grow through practical engineering guidance.
Ability to coordinate technical dependencies with vendors, Product Owners, architecture teams, business stakeholders, and internal engineering teams to deliver software solutions effectively.
Keys to Success in this Role:
Provide practical technical direction that helps teams make sound design, implementation, testing, and production readiness decisions.
Mentor developers, strengthen engineering practices, and promote knowledge sharing through practical technical guidance and peer collaboration.
Build trust across engineering teams by modeling ownership, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement in day-to-day technical delivery.
Maintain focus on production quality, platform resiliency, auditability, and operational excellence throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
Communicate effectively with Product Owners, architecture partners, business stakeholders, and engineering teams to align expectations and remove delivery blockers.
Use engineering metrics, delivery insights, and production support learnings to improve technical execution, delivery predictability, and platform reliability.
Bring strong technical discipline across agile delivery by clarifying design decisions, managing technical dependencies, and keeping teams focused on high-quality engineering outcomes.
