What You Will Do:
The Learning Support Specialist (Writing) plays a critical role in supporting students by encouraging active engagement in their education and empowering them to become independent, lifelong learners. This is a part-time, grant-funded position that provides individualized and small-group academic support to graduate students and undergraduate students enrolled in accelerated or advanced standing programs, with an emphasis on advanced academic writing, APA 7th edition, scholarly communication, evidence-based writing, literature reviews, critical reading, and graduate-level academic success strategies. The specialist will primarily support students in the School-Based Mental Health (SBMH) program while also providing academic support to the broader graduate and undergraduate student population as needed. The position partners with faculty to identify students who may benefit from additional academic support, collaborates with program faculty to promote student success, and connects students with appropriate university resources. This position does not provide library or reference services but collaborates with library faculty when specialized research assistance is needed.
This is a grant funded position through June 30, 2028.
Essential Responsibilities
Provide individualized and small-group academic support to graduate students and undergraduate students enrolled in accelerated or advanced standing programs, with an emphasis on advanced academic writing, APA 7th edition, evidence-based writing, literature reviews, critical reading, and graduate-level academic success strategies. Monitor student progress, promote independent learning, and maintain appropriate documentation of support services.
Collaborate with faculty to identify and support students who may benefit from academic assistance, provide embedded support for writing-intensive courses, and connect students with appropriate academic resources to promote persistence and success.
Develop and facilitate workshops and create instructional resources that strengthen graduate-level writing, scholarly communication, research writing, APA style, and other academic success skills.
Contribute to Learning Support initiatives, assess the effectiveness of student support services, collaborate with program leadership to enhance student success efforts, and participate in departmental projects and outreach activities.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in English, Communication, or other related degree (Education, Linguistics) required
Master's Degree preferred
One (1+) plus year experience teaching or tutoring in diverse modalities (hybrid/blended, online)
One (1+) plus year prior teaching or tutoring experience in writing and knowledge of writing pedagogy and instructional practice, particularly in writing and reading
One (1+) plus year experience with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities; specific knowledge of the needs of multilingual and multidialectal students
General knowledge APA style writing and formatting
Experience in graduate/doctoral writing support preferred

The wage range for this position is $19.71 to $27.60 per hour (typical workweek for this part-time position is 19 hours). Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate. Offers are based on multiple factors permitted by law, including but not limited to: budgetary considerations, job-related knowledge/skills, experience, market considerations, tenure and standing with the university (applicable to current employees), and internal equity.
