Full job description
Department:
Retriever Integrated Health (RIH) is UMBC's integrated model for student health and well-being, bringing medical care, counseling, and health promotion together under the Center for Well-Being. Counseling Services, housed within RIH and part of the Division of Student Affairs, provides confidential mental health care to UMBC students, including individual and group therapy, crisis response, consultation, and outreach designed to support students across the full range of their academic and personal lives.
The Lead Counselor maintains an active clinical caseload while serving as a peer-leadership resource for the counseling team, functioning as a step between Staff Counselor and Assistant Director. Alongside direct services such as diagnosis, treatment planning, and crisis response, the role advances RIH's mission by facilitating peer consultation, designing and delivering staff training, and building clinical skill across Counseling Services
Why Work at UMBC?
UMBC offers competitive compensation. This role starts at $86,000 and has over 4 weeks of vacation for regular full time roles. Tuition remission is also available.

As Lead Counselor, you'll spend the majority of your time doing what likely drew you to this work in the first place: seeing students. You'll carry an active clinical caseload, providing individual counseling, participating in crisis response and triage, and serving as a go-to resource for complex and high-risk cases.
Beyond direct care, you'll help the whole team get better at what it does. You'll facilitate peer consultation and case discussion, design and deliver staff training grounded in the team's real needs, and partner with colleagues to strengthen clinical skill across Counseling Services. This is a role for someone who wants to stay close to the clinical work while also shaping the practice of those around them, a genuine step between staff clinician and administrative leadership.
You'll also connect beyond the counseling center, collaborating with campus partners on culturally responsive programming and helping students find the right support wherever it lives.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Doctoral or master’s degree in counseling, clinical psychology, social work, or related mental health field
Licensure/ Certification Required: - Current, unrestricted license as a mental health professional (e.g., LCPC, psychologist, LCSW-C) in Maryland - Approved supervisor status in Maryland (e.g., LCPC Approved Supervisor, LCSW-C Approved Supervisor, or equivalent)
