Founded in 1965, the Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) is a social services organization advancing the social and economic well-being of immigrant and low-income New Yorkers through holistic services and community-led impact. CPC is the nation’s largest Asian American social services organization and serves as a trusted community anchor to over 80,000 community members who are served by CPC annually through 50+ high-quality programs and services across 35 sites in New York City. Department of Youth & Community Development/Comprehensive After School System (DYCD/COMPASS) contracts with the Chinese-American Planning Council to provide youth after school services to school-age children ages 5-12 years old. COMPASS seeks to promote positive youth development, foster social and emotional skills, and encourage youth leadership through engaging activities that incorporate hands-on learning in safe, welcoming environments. The program includes academic support, physical exercise, and enrichment age-appropriate activities such as literacy or STEM to enhance the academic, social, and physical development of children during the after-school hours, on certain evenings, weekends, and school holidays.
Reporting to the on-site Program Director and Site Supervisor, the Education Specialist plays a critical role in maintaining program quality by supporting frontline staff with effective planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational and enrichment activities. Candidates should demonstrate a growth mindset, actively seeking opportunities for professional development and continuous improvement to support staff and enhance program outcomes.
• Observe and evaluate program activities weekly; provide onsite coaching and training to staff to improve activity planning and delivery.
• Review lesson plans to ensure all activities align with clear learning goals and skill development; adapt curricula to meet program objectives.
• Collaborate with the Program Director to develop and implement engaging academic, enrichment, and recreational activities focused on DYCD goals, including STEM and literacy.
• Maintain effective and positive communication with school principals, staff, afterschool personnel, and parents.
• Assist with maintaining accurate records of staff and participant attendance.
• Develop and maintain participant progress reports to track learning and engagement.
• Create and utilize tools for evaluating the effectiveness of program activities and events.
• Maintain a regular schedule of staff observations, feedback sessions, and team meetings.
• Attend required meetings and trainings as directed by CPC and funding agencies.
• Meet regularly with the Program Director to discuss program needs, progress, and challenges.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director and Site Supervisor to support program success.
• Bachelor’s degree required; a degree in education, social work, counseling, or a related field preferred.
• Teaching credentials and classroom teaching experience for elementary-aged youth in afterschool or educational settings a plus.
• Experience providing staff coaching, training, and support in educational or youth development settings.
• Administrative and supervisory experience preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong social and emotional maturity with behavioral management skills; knowledge of positive youth development principles and ability to apply DYCD’s strengths-based approach.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Demonstrated growth mindset with eagerness to learn, adapt, and continuously enhance professional skills.
• $23.00 per hour; 9 hours minimum per week
• CPC offers eligible temporary staff members mandatory benefits, including paid New York State sick time
