Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 28,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer). MRNY is a newly unionized workplace.

MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), citizenship preparation, and in-school and after-school youth programs. Current Opening:

Our Adult Literacy Department offers English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. The ESOL Instructor/Case manager is a full-time, bargaining unit position based in Long Island, working 40 hours per week. This role is responsible for delivering contextualized English instruction using a student-centered methodology aligned with MRNY’s mission. They will also conduct administrative tasks for the classes in Long Island, such as class intake, Best Plus testing, and student assessments. In addition, they will provide case management and ongoing student support, and connect students to internal services.

Key Responsibilities but not limited to:

Curriculum Planning & Development

Develop ESOL course outlines, unit and lesson plans, and related materials.
Integrate thematic content and required materials into lessons as required by funders.
Upload and update course materials and plans in the shared Google Drive.
Research and develop new curriculum resources, with an emphasis on social justice and alignment with organizational priorities.
Continuously enhance teaching materials to reflect student needs and program goals.
Instruction & Classroom Management

Deliver ESOL instruction.

Deliver content material in ways that consider students’ levels and learning styles, the need to pace and scaffold information, and the need to balance the 4 skills, vocabulary, and grammar skill development
Implement classroom management strategies to support student engagement and retention.

Student Support & Communication

Contact students before the first class to confirm attendance and address questions.
Provide initial assessment and initial orientation for all enrolled students.
Monitor attendance and follow up with absent students to support retention.
Work closely with program administration to address attendance issues and maintain student retention goals.
Meet individually with students to review progress and identify additional support needs.

Assessment & Reporting

Administer BEST Plus assessments at intake and post-testing periods.
Analyze assessment results to track and document student progress.
Submit required reports, funder-specific progress reports.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student outcomes and milestones.

Program Administration & Grant Compliance

Conduct outreach, intake, and orientation processes, including scheduling and registration.
Ensure compliance with all funder requirements, including reporting, instructional hours, and professional development.

Enter data into Salesforce, including attendance, notes, case management notes, test scores, and other needed data.
Respond to funder and administrative requests on time.

Team Collaboration & Communication

Attend staff meetings, team meetings, and organizational meetings as required.
Participate in professional development, conferences, and trainings aligned with funder expectations.
Maintain regular communication with program leadership, HR, and IT support.
