Job Title: Mental Health Support Monitor
Job Type: Full Time

Reports to: Safety & Training Specialist
Summary/Objective
Under the supervision of the Safety & Training Specialist, the Mental Health Support Monitor (MHSM) promotes a safe, secure, and trauma-informed environment for individuals residing at Jugan Emergency Shelter. The MHSM actively engages with shelter guests, monitors shelter activities, responds to crisis situations, and supports the daily operations of the shelter while helping connect clients with behavioral health and supportive services.
In addition to shelter monitoring responsibilities, the Mental Health Support Monitor supports the Healthy Shelter Project by building positive relationships with clients, encouraging engagement in behavioral health services, assisting with referrals to the Mental Health Support Specialist, and reinforcing client participation in treatment and supportive services.
Key Responsibilities
Shelter Operations & Safety
Actively monitor activities occurring throughout Jugan Emergency Shelter, including common areas, dormitories, entrances, exits, and surrounding property.
Promote a safe, secure, and trauma-informed environment for shelter guests, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
Respond to crisis situations using de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed practices.
Assist in restoring a safe and orderly environment during behavioral, medical, or safety incidents.
Monitor CCTV surveillance systems and report safety, maintenance, or security concerns.
Ensure client compliance with shelter policies, procedures, and expectations.
Complete incident reports and required documentation accurately and timely.
Assist with shelter admissions, front desk operations, answering phones, doors, and maintaining required logs as assigned.
Maintain cleanliness and good order of shelter facilities and common areas.
Behavioral Health Support
Build positive, supportive relationships with shelter guests through consistent engagement and presence throughout the shelter.
Observe clients for behavioral health concerns and communicate observations to the Mental Health Support Specialist, Shelter Manager, or other appropriate staff.
Encourage clients to participate in behavioral health appointments, case management meetings, and other supportive services.
Reinforce service plans developed by the Mental Health Support Specialist and case management staff.
Assist in connecting clients with appropriate shelter staff and community resources based on identified needs.
Provide emotional support and encouragement while maintaining professional boundaries.
Participate in training related to trauma-informed care, mental health, de-escalation, and crisis intervention.
Client Support
Assist clients with obtaining linens, hygiene supplies, clothing, meals, transportation assistance, and other basic needs.
Provide respectful, non-judgmental customer service to all shelter guests.
Support client engagement throughout the shelter by maintaining regular interaction and identifying emerging needs.
Work collaboratively with shelter staff, case managers, healthcare providers, and community partners to promote positive client outcomes.
Administrative Responsibilities
Complete engagement notes, incident reports, and other required documentation in accordance with agency policies.
Utilize all PPCS-required database systems as required by the program.
Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and supervision.
Regular attendance and punctuality are required to perform this job effectively.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Safety & Training Specialist or as dictated by program needs.
Qualifications
Minimum High School Diploma or GED required and;
1 year experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness substance abuse, severe and persistent mental illness, dual diagnosis, homelessness, and/or HIV/AIDS.
Preferred: Associates or Bachelors degree in social work, psychology, counseling, human services, sociology, or a related field.
CPR and First Aid certification required (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
MANDT Training
Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles and professional boundaries.
Ability to effectively engage diverse populations with dignity, respect, and cultural sensitivity.
Knowledge of HIPAA/privacy standards and professional boundaries are required.
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during crises and emergencies.
Ability to accurately document client interactions, incidents, and service activities

Work Environment
This position operates primarily at Jugan Emergency Shelter located within PPCS Community Campus. The MHS Monitor will be assigned to a station located within Jugan Shelter. This position requires regular movement throughout the shelter to engage clients, monitor client well-being, observe shelter activities, and respond to client needs and crisis situations. The position also includes documentation duties and attendance at staff meetings.
