Job Description: Counter Staff Full-Time $15+ Tips
The Counter/Retail associate prepares orders for in-person customers, pick-up/delivery/shipping orders as directed by the Retail Manager and other Management Staff.

Demonstrate genuine Russ & Daughters hospitality and delivering consistently exceptional, haimish and professional customer service.
Demonstrate and communicate full product knowledge: smoked fish, caviar, candy side items/baked goods, canned goods, cheeses, salads and other foods available for sale. You must be able to educate our customers about taste, country of origin, preparation, portions, ingredients, pricing, how long products will stay fresh, ideas about how to serve it, and any additional background information.
Set up and maintain all retail and display cases: maintain standard FIFO rotation, inventory, and communication with management regarding product needs/issues for the counter, front and face retail products, dust, clean, rearrange, replenish displays as necessary.
Slice and wrap smoked fish; prepare and package sandwiches to our weight measurement and quality standards; able to use scales and labels with accuracy.
Maintain a spotless workspace (including equipment) in compliance with DOH regulation as well as rigorous internal health and cleanliness standards; keeping knives and cutting boards clean at all times.
Check customers out at the register; full knowledge of POS, credit card and cash handling procedures.
Brew hot and cold brewed Coffee, maintain and clean all equipment.
Merchandise sales: knowledge of all merchandise, how to package, display, and restock.
Tests/tastes ingredients and finished items alongside Supervisors/Managers to ensure that each item meets quality standards.
Cleans, stocks/restocks, and breaks down work location throughout and (in particular) at end of shift leaving space clean, stocked, and ready for next shift.
Ensures raw and finished product freshness; maintains Julian dating and product rotation.
Performs any additional assigned related duties.
Proficient slicing and knife skills. Ability to handle and clean knives with precision, efficiency and safety; slice to minimize waste.
Ability to connect with customers in a personal and professional manner. Counter staff need to make sure that customers are greeted when they enter and attended to as quickly as possible; both in person and over the phone.
Ability to handle customer concerns/complaints in a professional and friendly manner; both in person and over the phone.
Demonstrates excellent salesmanship. Giving customers ideas/updates about both classic items and newer ones.
Ability to speak about all of our locations, what makes each special, and about The Sturgeon Queens documentary.
Basic understanding of or the ability to learn basic sanitation and regulations for workplace safety to maintain a spotless personal and general workspace (including all equipment) in compliance with DOH regulation as well as rigorous internal health and cleanliness standards.
Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
Ability to work quickly and efficiently.
Ability to work with a positive attitude as part of a team.
Ability to maintain personal hygiene, health and safety regulations.
Ability to communicate with coworkers and kitchen leadership.
High school or vocational school coursework in kitchen basics such as food safety, preferred.
Prior related experience preferred.
Prolonged periods of standing and working.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
Must be able to work weekend, holiday, and periodic extended hours as business needs require.

Since 1914, this landmark institution has been owned and operated by 4 generations of the Russ family. For 103 years, Russ & Daughters has provided the tastes and traditions of a true New York experience. In 2014, on the 100th anniversary of Russ & Daughters, 4th Generation Owners Josh Russ Tupper and Niki Russ Federman opened RUSS & DAUGHTERS CAFE: restaurant on Orchard Street, the street where their great grandfather peddled herring from a barrel and pushcart. In 2016, they opened RUSS & DAUGHTERS AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM: take-out appetizing counter and restaurant. RUSS & DAUGHTERS BAGELS & BAKERY launched in 2016, where Russ & Daughters makes all of its own bagels, bialys, shissel rye bread, pumpernickel, babka, black and white cookies, challah, and traditional baked goods. Russ & Daughters has been honored with awards from the NYC Mayor's Office, Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, Foundation for Jewish Culture, and State Senator Daniel Squadron who introduced a resolution that was unanimously passed by the New York State Senate. Russ & Daughters has received praise in countless publications, and the restaurant was #2 on Pete Wells's New York Times list of "The 10 Best New Restaurants of 2014." Joel Russ, an Eastern European immigrant who arrived in America in 1907, started the business to cater to the throngs of Jewish immigrants settling in NYC’s Lower East Side. In 1920, he opened his store at 179 East Houston Street, after a few years of operating a storefront around the corner. He renamed the business "Russ & Daughters," after his daughters who joined him as the 2nd generation. Mark Russ Federman succeeded as the 3rd Generation, and is now retired. He’s the author of a celebrated memoir Russ & Daughters: The House That Herring Built. Russ & Daughters is now owned by the 4th Generation of the Russ family: Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper.
