Requires strong technical expertise in APES 110 or IESBA codes and experience in professional services risk management. A tertiary qualification in Accounting or a related discipline is required.
Full job description
We’re BDO, a global professional services firm connected to local markets. Our people work together to provide specialist expertise, helping businesses achieve their goals.
We inspire others, to go further. We create together, to reach higher. We build trust, to lead purposefully.
Whether you're building your future or starting your career with us, you won’t do it alone. From creating solutions for our clients to building careers for our people, we shape what matters, and that’s where you come in.
About the Role
BDO is committed to the proactive management of risks and opportunities. This is achieved through the development of a strong culture and the implementation of practical frameworks and processes across all BDO Australia functions, service lines and operational activities.
The Team
The Quality and Risk Management team supports the Firm in delivering the knowledge, skills and systems our people need to do the right thing all the time. Key to this is ensuring that risks to BDO are managed on a proactive basis and that policies and procedures regarding independence, conflicts and ethics are consistently applied nationally.
The Role
Due to continued growth, we have an exciting permanent opportunity for a Manager within our Quality and Risk Management team.
Working closely with the Senior Manager and Head of ICE, you will serve as a key point of contact for complex independence consultations, escalations and policy matters, exercising strong judgement and taking ownership of outcomes. You will also drive continuous improvement across core ICE activities, including risk identification, stakeholder guidance, policy implementation and capability uplift.
Key responsibilities and Duties:
Lead complex auditor independence consultations by applying sound judgement and relevant standards, including the APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (including Independence Standards), which is largely aligned with the IESBA Code (International Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants), the Corporations Act 2001, US SEC Independence Standards, and internal policy. This includes assessing the permissibility of non-assurance services for audit clients, as well as business relationships, ethics, and conflict of interest matters.
Provide clear, practical advice that meets regulatory requirements and supports business needs.
Review work prepared by and coach junior team members to ensure consistency, quality and technical soundness.
Support the Senior Manager and Head of ICE on complex and high-risk independence matters, including breaches, regulatory queries and remediation.
Lead the assessment, documentation and communication of independence technical interpretations, including stakeholder management and escalation where needed.
Identify emerging key risks early and implement strategies to prevent or reduce potential independence issues.
Support the development and implementation of ICE policies, frameworks and procedures in line with changing regulatory requirements.
Drive process improvements and automation to improve the efficiency, consistency and transparency of assessments.
Translate global independence developments into clear, practical guidance for the business.
Mentor and support junior team members through guidance and quality review to build team capability.
Role model excellence in independence, promoting a strong culture of risk awareness and accountability.
Manage work allocation, prioritisation and resourcing to enable effective delivery in a fast-paced environment.
About You
To be successful in this role you will have well-developed technical expertise across key independence areas, with strong demonstrated experience in a comparable role, ideally within professional services. You will have effective stakeholder management skills and the ability to manage conflicting priorities proactively in a fast-paced environment managing complex risk matters.
In addition, you will have:
Strong knowledge of, and practical experience in the application of APES 110 Code of Ethics or the IESBA Code is required.
Proven technical capability in assessing non-assurance services and applying auditor independence requirements to permissibility decisions.
Working knowledge of US SEC auditor independence requirements desirable and would be highly regarded.
Demonstrated technical capability in conflicts of interest, with excellent attention to detail, agility and adaptability.
Hands-on approach, with a willingness to take ownership of day-to-day tasks and ease pressure points across the team as may be required.
Experience drafting technical assessment memos, breach documentation and communications.
Experience developing technical learning materials and delivering training to support service line needs.
A tertiary qualification with an Accounting major, or in a related discipline or similar studies
Applicants must have full working rights in Australia at the time of application.
