Salary – Legal Officer – Grade 5, Base Salary ($154,403 - $157,430), plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading

Your role

Join the Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution team within Law Reform and Legal Services and play a key role in delivering high-quality legal services to government clients. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced litigation lawyer to manage complex and high-profile matters, appear before courts and tribunals, contribute to law reform and policy initiatives, and mentor junior legal staff. You will work alongside highly skilled legal professionals in a collaborative environment while making a meaningful contribution to the delivery of public services across NSW.

What you’ll do

As part of the Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution team, you will provide expert legal advice and representation on a broad range of complex and sensitive civil litigation matters affecting the Department and its clients.

You will lead and manage litigation matters, provide strategic legal advice, supervise legal work, and contribute to the development of legal policy, practice standards and service delivery initiatives.

You will also

  • Conduct and manage complex litigation before courts and tribunals.
  • Provide high-level legal advice, briefings, submissions and correspondence on complex legal issues.
  • Review and develop legal precedents, reports, contracts, deeds and other legal documents.
  • Supervise, mentor and support junior solicitors and administrative staff and contribute to a culture of professional excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Lead or contribute to legal projects, law reform initiatives and policy development.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, counsel, government agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Design and deliver legal education and training programs.
  • Contribute to the strategic direction and operational effectiveness of the practice group.
  • Will work as part of a highly experienced and supportive team of solicitors

What we’re looking for

  • Extensive experience managing complex civil litigation matters and providing strategic legal advice in a government, private practice or in-house legal environment.
  • Strong advocacy, drafting and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound professional judgment and deliver high-quality outcomes within tight timeframes.
  • Legal qualifications and eligibility to hold a practising certificate as a Government Legal Practitioner issued by the Law Society of NSW, with Condition 2 removed.
