The Special Recreation Leader assists staff in conducting therapeutic recreational activities for children and adults with disabilities at day camps. Responsibilities include leading physical exercises, enforcing safety standards, and facilitating arts, crafts, and athletic programs.
Candidates must have at least one year of experience working with individuals with disabilities. A high school diploma or GED is recommended, along with basic swimming skills and the ability to lead recreational activities.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under direct supervision, provides assistance to staff in conducting recreational activities for children and adults with disabilities during the operation of day camp activities. Performs related duties as required.
Training and Experience: One year experience working with individuals with disabilities is required. Graduation from high school or equivalent certification (GED) is recommended.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of competitive sports programs for people with disabilities. Effective oral communication skills. Ability to enforce safety rules. Ability to lead physical, recreational and leisure activities. Basic swimming skills. Ability to exercise good judgment.

The Chicago Park District owns more than 8,700 acres of green space, making it the largest municipal park manager in the nation.
