Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) is looking for a visionary professional to join our team. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in designing long-range transit networks that connect communities efficiently and equitably. By integrating land use with innovative transportation solutions, you will help build a more accessible, sustainable, and vibrant city for everyone.
As the Principal Planner for Strategic Transit Planning, you will lead and support a variety of transit-related projects within the Transit Planning, Ridership & Revenue section. Additionally, you will coordinate engagement opportunities and represent ETS in multidisciplinary studies.
What will you do?
Contribute directly to the ETS Annual Service Plan and long-term strategic planning initiatives
Plan and coordinate ETS participation in Mass Transit planning, including reviewing concept planning and design, and gathering feedback from ETS interest holders
Develop operational strategies to integrate intermodal transportation options like active transportation and micro-mobility with the future transit network
Monitor and optimize the operational performance of On-Demand transit service
Support regional service partnerships by developing service options, reviewing network connectivity and advising on shared service planning initiatives
Review and prioritize bus shelter management based on bus shelter guidelines, considering factors such as ridership, safety, and infrastructure conditions
Conduct comprehensive equity analyses to embed equity considerations into service planning decisions
Work with property owners to maintain and develop access agreements for ETS use of private property
Participate in public meetings, present planning findings, and summarize input from engagement participants
Respond to City Council and public inquiries professionally and in a timely manner
Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or a related discipline
A minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible planning experience, preferably within a transit or transportation context
Professional membership with the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI), the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), or an equivalent provincial organization
Skills required for success:
Deep knowledge of transit or transportation planning and its intersection with land use planning
Strong technical skills in statistical analysis, research methodologies, and geospatial mapping tools
Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Excel, and transit planning software like Hastus
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to address community partners and Council with empathy and clarity
Strong conflict resolution and relationship-building skills to balance competing priorities across departments and interested and/or affected parties

Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusion
Work Environment:
This position primarily operates in an indoor office environment with regular, focused screen time and active listening requirements. Occasional outdoor site visits are required to assess infrastructure and feasibility, which may involve exposure to various weather conditions. The role involves regular interaction with public groups and front-line staff, occasionally requiring the navigation of confrontational or high-stress situations
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
