POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Globe and Mail is seeking an ambitious reporter to cover energy and politics in Ottawa.
Canada has set ambitious goals to ramp up the country’s energy sectors and has committed to streamline approval processes to help attract investment to achieve those goals and to diversify trade. To be successful, you will have a firm grip on energy, energy policy and the business of energy, including capital markets. The ideal candidate will understand the speed and extent to which the political discussion on energy has shifted and a curiosity to explore Ottawa's intention to be both investor and business enabler in Canada’s energy future.
Reporting to the politics and economy editor, this is an opportunity to join a collaborative team of reporters who cover politics, economics and business. Working out of The Globe’s Ottawa bureau, with whom you will work closely along with Western Canada bureaus, you will be expected to file a variety of stories regularly: source-based scoops; breaking and scheduled news; enterprise reporting; and features that bring energy and economic policy to life.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cover breaking and live economic and energy policy news from Ottawa.
Frequently pitch fresh, compelling story ideas
Develop and maintain sources in government and business
Write clearly and concisely on deadline
Work with colleagues across the department and wider newsroom to generate story ideas and enrich The Globe’s coverage
Think beyond standard storytelling formats and participate in Globe subscriber events
QUALIFICATIONS:
At least five years’ experience as a reporter in a daily news organization
Solid news judgment with a track record of enterprise work
Ability to translate economic policy into engaging prose for The Globe’s audience
Familiarity with political reporting and economics
Strong writing with versatile range - from hard news to human-interest feature to explanatory
Comfortable working in a variety of formats, including live blogs, newsletters, video and audio
This position is based in the Ottawa office and requires a minimum of two days a week in office.
APPLICATION: Please include a cover letter, with three links to your previous work, along with your resume (that is written by you, not AI). Our promise to readers is that the best work comes from our own (human) curiosity and creativity - we’d like to see yours.

Defined Benefit pension plan
Annual wellness subsidy
