ABOUT TRANSGRID
At Transgrid, we play a crucial role in delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable energy to millions of Australians. Operating over 13,000 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 128 substations across NSW and the ACT, we connect electricity generators to the distribution network powering homes, businesses, and communities. As Australia accelerates its energy transition, the work we do has never been more significant.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Transgrid's Delivery group is looking for a Senior Planner to take the lead on project and program scheduling across a capital delivery portfolio that spans substation upgrades, transmission line works, synchronous condenser installations and data centre connections.
This is the senior planning role in the team. You are the expert in scheduling techniques and systems, you lead the Earned Value Management function and you drive the quality of schedule outcomes across the program. You work directly alongside the Project Controls Manager and Project Directors, integrating complex project schedules, leading EOT reviews, preparing critical path and forecast reporting and mentoring the junior planners in the team.
The role is based in Newcastle or Sydney and reports to the Project Controls Manager. It suits someone with substantial P6 experience on a portfolio of capital works who is comfortable working autonomously, communicating schedule positions to senior stakeholders and pushing back constructively when a schedule is not reflecting reality. If you have done serious planning work on infrastructure programs and want a role with genuine scope and seniority, this is worth pursuing.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
The work varies across the project cycle but here is the general shape of it.
Schedule Development and Maintenance: Building and maintaining high-level and detailed project schedules in Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project. You work with internal stakeholders to refine schedules until the outcome is right, negotiate deadlines and levelling issues across business units, and integrate multiple project schedules into a master program working through conflicts and finding solutions that keep the broader program on track.
Earned Value Assessment: Leading EVM in close collaboration with Development, Engineering and Project Management teams. You review and align EV assumptions in schedules and Work Breakdown Structures, perform Schedule Progress Reviews, report on SPI and CPI in S-Curve analysis and help project leadership identify and investigate root causes of deviation against baseline. When the numbers tell a story, you make sure the right people understand what it means.
EOT and Claims: Leading the review and submission of Extensions of Time and monthly progress claims. You make sure submissions are well-supported, accurately reflect the schedule position and are delivered on time.
Reporting and Communication: Preparing reports on project performance, critical path and forecast completion. You communicate schedule outcomes to the right stakeholders in the right format not every stakeholder needs the same information and you know how to tailor what you present.
Stakeholder Management: Working across Delivery, Commercial, Project Controls and Project Management to support the Project Director. You represent the planning group at internal and external meetings when needed and deal constructively with competing stakeholder interests. You engage with external consultants on schedule inputs and keep everyone aligned on where the program stands.
Mentoring and Team Development: Supporting the development of junior planners, helping them build their understanding of schedule management and contributing to a continuous improvement culture across the project controls team. You are the senior expert in planning techniques and systems within Transgrid and people come to you for guidance.
WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS
A well-maintained schedule is one of the most important tools a project team has. It shows where the program actually stands, where the risks are sitting and what decisions need to be made. On a portfolio of the scale Transgrid is running, a Senior Planner who builds accurate, credible schedules and communicates them clearly gives project leadership the visibility they need to make good decisions before problems become expensive.
The EVM function this role leads provides early warning signals that save significant cost and time when they are acted on. Getting this right matters on projects that will shape the NSW transmission network for decades.
ABOUT YOU
Substantial experience in project planning and earned value on capital projects. You know Primavera P6 well, you can build and maintain complex schedules across a program of works and you can communicate the schedule position clearly to people who do not live in the planning tool every day.
Tertiary qualifications at degree level in an appropriate discipline.
Substantial experience in project planning, earned value and schedule risk analysis in a capital-intensive industry.
Strong hands-on skills in Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project across a program or portfolio of works.
Experience leading the review and submission of Extensions of Time and progress claims.
Proven ability to integrate multiple project schedules into a master program and manage conflicting schedule demands.
Experience in project risk analysis and reporting.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a high standard of written and verbal communication.
Strong command of Excel and the broader Microsoft Office suite.
Prior experience in the engineering and construction phases of capital projects.
Experience guiding or mentoring junior planning staff.
Able to work autonomously to a high standard and manage competing priorities without losing the thread.
Good to have:
Experience in the power industry or on large substation and transmission line projects.
Experience with schedule risk analysis software and quantitative schedule risk assessment.
Knowledge of EVM standards and their practical application on major infrastructure programs.
OUR LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES AND VALUES
Courage, Care, Clarity and Connection. These are the principles we lead by at Transgrid. Courage is doing the right thing even when it is not easy. Care is genuinely looking out for the people around you. Clarity means your team knows what good looks like and why it matters. Connection links people to the bigger picture and to each other.
Our Values — Safety, Achievement, Integrity and Service — shape how we show up every day for the customers and communities that depend on us.
BENEFITS AND PERKS
At Transgrid, we empower our people with a well-rounded benefits package designed to support their personal, professional and social wellbeing, helping them deliver their best work every day. Employees have access to a range of corporate discounts across retail, utilities, travel, health and wellbeing, as well as novated leasing options, workplace flexibility, 20 weeks paid parental leave and more.
Beyond benefits, we believe in real development and progression. Here, you will have access to regular and ongoing training, tertiary education support, and career mentoring, enabling you to build a career that evolves with you.
Applications close on Friday, 21 August 2026. Apply today and don't miss out!
We’ve ensured the smooth operation of over 11,517 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 136 substations and switching stations across NSW and the ACT, with interconnections to QLD and VIC.
Our most crucial work is leading the transition to Australia’s clean energy future. The traditional coal system that served our country for decades is nearing the end of its life, to be replaced by wind and solar generation.
We’re making the right decisions now to prepare for the opportunities and challenges ahead – a changing climate, population growth and technology innovation.
As we lead the way towards a more resilient future, we’re working closely with our customers and communities to make sure no one is left behind.
Wherever you are in NSW or the ACT, you can be confident in the reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity we transmit as we make a better power system for generations to come.
