Reports to: Director of Operations / Station Supervisor FLSA: Non-exempt, hourly Locations: Roanoke, Salem Schedule: Cycled 10- and 12-hour rotating shifts; 24/7/365 operation including nights, weekends, and holidays
Position Summary
The EMT provides basic life support patient care and safe ambulance operation for scheduled and emergent ground transports, including inter-facility transfers, discharges, dialysis and clinic runs, bariatric transports, and emergency response. EMTs work as part of a minimum two-person crew under PPT's medical direction and Virginia OEMS protocols.
Essential Duties
Assess, treat, and monitor patients within the EMT-Basic scope of practice under PPT protocols and the direction of the Operational Medical Director.
Operate ambulances and wheelchair vehicles safely and in compliance with all federal, state, and local traffic and EMS regulations.
Secure every patient to the stretcher/cot and secure the stretcher in the vehicle before movement.
Administer oxygen and provide first aid and medical assistance to the attending EMT or Paramedic when assigned as driver.
Transport patient luggage, medical records, medications, and comfort items with the patient; deliver patients to the specific unit, ward, clinic, or admissions point directed by receiving staff.
Complete accurate, timely ePCR documentation in Traumasoft for every transport, including times, mileage, patient condition, and interventions.
Communicate with dispatch on status, ETA, delays, and on-scene conditions; accept and acknowledge assignments through CAD.
Perform pre- and post-shift vehicle and equipment inspections; report deficiencies immediately and remove unsafe units from service.
Clean and disinfect the patient compartment and reusable equipment after each transport in accordance with PPT's PPE and Vehicle Cleaning/Disinfection SOP; complete the decontamination checklist.
Maintain patient privacy and HIPAA compliance at all times; conduct oneself courteously and in a businesslike manner with patients, families, and facility staff.
Required Qualifications
Current Virginia OEMS certification as EMT-Basic (or NREMT with Virginia reciprocity eligibility at hire).
Current CPR/BLS certification.
Valid driver's license appropriate to vehicle class; minimum age and licensure meeting Virginia EMS vehicle operator requirements.
Completion of a DHHS-standard EMT training program of at least 150 hours, or equivalent, including an in-hospital clinical component.
Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) completion at or shortly after hire.
Standard and advanced first aid competency and oxygen administration capability.
Driving record for the past three years free of: license cancellation or suspension; convictions for operating without insurance; convictions for driving without a valid license for the class of vehicle; and any DUI/DUID conviction.
Successful completion of PPT's criminal background check with no felony convictions or pending felony charges within the past five years.
Current TB testing per Virginia guidelines and compliance with PPT's immunization and health screening requirements.
Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in English for clinical documentation and radio traffic.
Preferred
Prior interfacing with hospital discharge, dialysis, or VA transport operations.
Experience with electronic patient care reporting systems.
Bariatric or power-load stretcher experience (Stryker Power-LOAD).
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 125 lbs. with assistance and participate in team lifts of significantly greater weight; push, pull, bend, kneel, and reach repeatedly; sit and drive for extended periods; work in confined spaces in a moving vehicle; and tolerate outdoor conditions in all weather. Requires visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient assessment and safe vehicle operation.
Contract-Assigned Personnel
Employees assigned to federal or health-system contracts must additionally clear the customer's investigative requirements — for VA work, a Special Agreement Check (SAC) with fingerprinting conducted at the VA facility, renewed annually — and must report any new charges or convictions arising during employment immediately.
