Creating these devices involves a close partnership between hardware engineers, product designers, software engineers, suppliers and manufacturing partners. Devices Reliability team at Microsoft is looking for a creative, talented and experienced engineer with a solid background and expertise in Mechanical, Reliability, Materials or related engineering fields.
The candidate’s primary responsibility will be the development and implementation of methodologies and techniques to evaluate and enhance component or product reliability. This Quality & Reliability Engineer role may require the candidate to engage on multiple products and with multiple cross-functional teams. A solid skill-set covering engineering analysis, problem solving, communication and external partner management is required.

Responsibilities
Assists in using principles of Design for Reliability (DfR) to ensure the design of more reliable products with up-front modeling, materials and process characterization, and other effective risk analysis vehicles, including integrating security design patterns.
Gathers information to inform decisions on whether to perform design reliability risk analysis (including factors that will determine analysis scoping and resource needs), test infrastructure development, or test execution internally or externally.
Develops basic knowledge of industry trends, competitors' products, and/or advances in various technical domains related to Hardware Reliability Engineering.
Gathers data to help develop reliability specifications for product features based on customer usage models and requirements, expected failure risks, and relevant reliability risk assessment with guidance from others.
Assists in creating appropriate analyses, test techniques, or design/materials/process solutions to reliability challenges with guidance from others.
Assists in creating test techniques or design/materials/process solutions that are novel or patentable with guidance from others Contributes to the development of qualification plans for product features based on Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) with guidance from others.
Coordinates existing outsourced testing plans and processes. Assists in developing plans to ensure that mass-produced devices continue to meet the reliability level qualified at launch, using ongoing reliability tests and tracking Critical to Reliability (CtR) metrics.
Assists in implementing and tracking product qualification plans, with guidance from others.
Communicates project progress/status within the project team (e.g., to customers and partners) and escalates issues as necessary.
Assists in implementing and tracking product qualification plans, with guidance from others.
Supports monitoring and auditing of supplier factory operations to ensure high-quality product manufacturing, as appropriate.
Assists in integrating risk assessments (e.g., supplier or partner delays, incomplete specs, security concerns, or tool issues) into qualification plans with guidance from others.
Documents essential details about materials, components, and assemblies relevant to device reliability with guidance from others. Accurately records and tracks changes to qualification plans. Controls standard test data in accordance with security protocols for identified content.
Assists in developing plans to ensure that mass-produced devices continue to meet the reliability level qualified at launch, using ongoing reliability tests and tracking Critical to Reliability (CtR) metrics.
Records test data and conducts basic data/statistical analysis to identify bugs, defects, or failure rates with guidance from others.
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
OR 4+ years technical engineering experience.
Additional or preferred qualifications
Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Reliability Engineering IC2 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $85,400 - $168,100 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $111,100 - $183,700 per year.
This position will be open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
