Full job description
Overview
Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. Our focus is on smart growth, high efficiency, and delivering a trusted experience to customers and partners worldwide and we are looking for a Senior Hardware Serviceability Engineer to help achieve that mission.
As Microsoft's Cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and HW infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the Hardware, Infrastructure Management, and Fundamentals Engineering (HIFE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for Cloud infrastructure reliability, improving the planning process, manufacturing, quality, delivery at scale, serviceability and sustainability. We are looking for a Senior Hardware Serviceability Engineer with a passion for learning and embracing customer focused solutions, developing insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will optimize the Cloud infrastructure and its serviceability.
We are looking for a Senior Hardware Serviceability Engineer to lead and influence Design for Serviceability (DFS) and Design for Integration (DFI) strategies across SCHIE and Operations organizations as part of NPI program execution. You will work with senior engineers on design principles, lead serviceability design and tool development, and champion service procedures, tooling, and spares readiness with ODM, Microsoft design and datacenter partners. This role emphasizes building organizational fundamentals in serviceability engineering by leveraging experience and cross‑team collaboration while supporting Microsoft’s cloud‑scale hardware programs.
Responsibilities
Drive the isolation of DFS and DFI requirements through partner‑assessment checklists for assigned technology pillar and product groups; Lead with documented evidence and action items; Own serviceability verification at BOP/ASR/EVR/DVR/PVR gates.
Lead serviceability design with hardware teardowns; capture photos, confirm time‑on‑task results, produce tool lists, and own FRU determination; drive issues in ADO and track to closure.
Mentor / Influence EE/ME/Thermal engineers to define clear FRU boundaries and labeling; ensure serviceability, including tool‑less or standard-tool serviceability in CAD and/or early prototypes.
Author and update service collateral (Service Manuals, spares BOM, labels, tool lists) while validating DFS and DFI in L10/L11 builds and pilot field trials.
Own supplier scorecard KPI with impacted SIs/ODMs; drive delivery of prototypes / mechanical mock-ups and implement ADO or ECO changes.
Maintain change control hygiene (ECO/ECN, ADO work items) and ensure serviceability artifacts are versioned and traceable.
Drive post‑mortems and lessons‑learned; roll improvements into checklists and standards for subsequent phases of future NPI programs.
