Responsibilities
The substitute teacher will provide continuity of instruction by implementing existing lesson plans aligned with IB and Common Core standards. They are also responsible for maintaining classroom culture, managing student assessments, and collaborating with the lead partnering teacher.
Requirements
Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field. A valid Professional Educator License (PEL) and experience with the IB PYP framework or Responsive Classroom practices are preferred.

Job Summary
The PYP Substitute Teacher provides continuity of instruction for a classroom during a Teacher’s paternity leave. This role is responsible for implementing the existing instructional program in a consistent, engaging manner, following unit and lesson plans developed in alignment with the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework and Common Core State Standards.
In addition to academic responsibilities, the substitute is expected to integrate faith-based principles into instruction, fostering students’ growth across academic, social, emotional, and spiritual domains, and to maintain the classroom routines and culture established by the Lead Teacher. Instructional practices are data-driven, with regular assessments used to inform teaching strategies and support individual student development.
Ensure a safe school environment, both indoors and outdoors, in accordance with building operation protocols (keys, fobs, alarm codes), the Daystar Distinctives, and Responsive Classroom practices.
Participate in a brief staff prayer at 7:35 AM, Monday through Thursday, in the Gathering Place.
Engage in school events to promote and strengthen positive school culture.
Complete assigned arrival and dismissal duties.
Fulfill essential job functions as outlined in this job description; during drills or emergencies, assist as needed.
Be punctual, appropriately dressed, and prepared for work at designated days and times.
Model positive and respectful interactions with students and all members of the Daystar community at all times.
Be an excellent ambassador of Daystar Academy at all times.
Respect all school procedures and chain of command.
Adhere to all requirements outlined in the Staff Handbook and comply with school policies.

As the Long-Term Substitute Teacher at Daystar Academy, responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Instruction & Curriculum
Provide a safe, nurturing learning environment grounded in Daystar Distinctives and Responsive Classroom practices.
Deliver instruction using the unit and lesson plans provided by the returning Lead Teacher, aligned with Common Core State Standards (or other applicable standards such as NGSS), the IB PYP Standards and Practices, and Daystar’s curricular expectations.
Maintain continuity of IB requirements related to instruction, assessment, and reflection during the coverage period.
Submit lesson plans as required by the Program Director.
Use data and reflection to inform and improve instructional practices, with a focus on student growth.
Collaboration & Leadership
Guide and coach the PYP Lead Partnering Teacher to facilitate small-group instruction, class activities, and task delegation effectively.
Actively participate in collaborative planning, professional learning communities, and school-wide initiatives during the coverage period.
Support and promote a culture of teamwork and mutual respect among all staff and stakeholders.
Coordinate with the Lead Partnering Teacher prior to and following leave to ensure a smooth transition and handoff.
Assessment & Feedback
Maintain accurate records of student progress, using assessment data to support and extend learning as needed, in collaboration with the Lead Partnering teacher.
Collect and curate student work samples and engagement artifacts using Toddle’s portfolio feature, as guided by the Lower and Middle School Coordinator, and in collaboration with the Lead Partnering teacher.
Provide timely, meaningful assessment feedback to students and parents, and regularly update digital platforms with progress data, in collaboration with the Lead Partnering teacher.
Participate in and contribute to parent-teacher conferences, progress reports, and ongoing communication regarding student academic and behavioral development, in collaboration with the Lead Partnering teacher.

Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and staff members at all times.

Execute administrative and classroom maintenance duties as outlined in the Staff Handbook.

Represent Daystar Academy with integrity and excellence in all interactions.
Uphold all school procedures, policies, and the established chain of command.
Supervise students and assist with school-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field.
Preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education.
Valid Professional Educator License (PEL).
Experience with the IB PYP framework and/or Responsive Classroom practices.
Prior experience as a long-term substitute or classroom teacher.
Growth mindset about teaching and learning.
