Full job description
Rewarding Careers Are Built Here
The Safety Codes Council (the Council) is a leader in Alberta’s structural and technical safety system. What we do matters – our work helps make the province safer, supports healthy communities, and contributes to lasting economic growth and prosperity. As an independent regulatory agency, the Council is responsible for helping ensure that Alberta’s structures and equipment are safe, accessible, and resilient. What sets us apart isn’t just the impact of our work – it’s how we do it. Our people are trusted professionals who value sound judgment, learning, and integrity. We’ve built a collaborative, service oriented culture where work is meaningful and where people are supported to grow, contribute, and do their best work.
About The Team
The Council’s Education Excellence team delivers training and continuing education to Alberta’s safety codes officers, permit issuers, municipal and agency staff, and other system stakeholders. We are adaptive, mission-driven professionals who take pride in knowing that what we build has real impact, and our culture values integrity, continuous learning, and thoughtful challenge.
About The Role
We are looking for a Senior Learning Experience Designer who can design and develop technical learning experiences that are engaging, evidence-based, and on message. If you are a big picture thinker who enjoys collaborating with colleagues and experts, and who understands that technical education is not just about accuracy, but must further organizational goals and strategy, this role may be for you.
Please note: This is a 12 month term position with the possibility of extension.
What You’ll Do
Development of Learning Ecosystems, Curricula, and Frameworks:
Advise on and participate in ongoing curriculum development, including alignment with strategic goals, regulatory frameworks, accessibility standards, and evaluation metrics.
Learner-Centred Instructional Design:
Lead consultations with experts and system stakeholders. Incorporate SME input and strategic goals into learning strategies, instructional design plans, course outlines, and storyboards.
Course Creation and Development:
Execute learning strategies, instructional design plans, and course outlines by creating scripts, activities, assessments and other content for online workshops, e-learning courses, and more. Apply accessibility and UX principles via prototype, test, and refine cycles.
Quality Assurance:
Collaborate with peers, experts, and other SMEs to review learning products for clarity, accessibility, technical accuracy, and pedagogical strength.
What You Bring
To be successful in this role, we recommend a post-secondary degree in adult education, instructional design, curriculum development, or a related field, as well as 5+ years of demonstrated experience in instructional design and development. That said, we are most interested in how well you can think, build, and adapt, so candidates who believe their education and experience are equivalent are expressly invited to apply.
Our ideal candidate also brings:
Proficiency in the Articulate 360 suite, including Rise 360 and Storyline 360 (or equivalent).
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or video production tools.
Experience collaborating with technical SMEs.
Experience working in regulated environments or technical industries.
We are looking for someone who:
Has a track record of designing and building well-structured eLearning courses.
Can tell a good story – and makes sure it’s on message.
Could talk for hours about innovation, but enjoys executing even more.
Is passionate about instructional design, but knows there’s more than one way to do it well.
Values our adult learners’ time and can explain their instructional choices.
Understands how to leverage AI, but knows human judgment and creativity is irreplaceable.
Knows that plans are necessary, but that iteration is the path to excellence.
Why Safety Codes Council?
You’ll find meaningful work in a collaborative, service‑oriented environment that values curiosity, integrity, and learning.
Along with purpose‑driven work, we offer a competitive total rewards package that supports well‑being, growth, and balance, including:
Competitive salary: $94,300 - $126,500, commensurate with education and demonstrated experience
Starting three weeks of vacation, plus personal days
100% employer‑paid health and dental premiums
A health and lifestyle spending account
Professional development support
A flexible, employer‑matched retirement savings plan
A full‑time work week of 36.25 hours (Monday–Friday)
You’ll also benefit from a hybrid work environment that supports focus, collaboration, and flexibility.
We support our people with meaningful projects, a trusting and supportive culture, and opportunities to grow their careers while making a tangible impact. If this sounds like a great fit for you, we’d love to hear from you!
This opportunity will remain posted until a suitable candidate is selected. We’ll be reviewing applications and conducting interviews on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.
