the ability to pay. We welcome individuals of all ages, from infants, school-age children (5+), youth and adults. The Floating Hospital is a Federally Qualified Health Center and the largest provider to homeless families living in family shelters and domestic violence safe houses throughout all five boroughs.
Dental Assistants work in a well-lighted, clean environment near the dental chair so that they can arrange instruments, materials, and medication and hand them to the dentist when needed. Dental assistants must wear gloves, masks, eyewear, and protective clothing to protect themselves and their patients form infectious diseases. Assistants also follow safety procedure to minimize the risks associated with the use of x-ray machines. The agency observes a no-smoking policy.

As family doctor to New York City’s poorest residents, The Floating Hospital has continuously provided relief, health education and primary healthcare to all five boroughs of New York City for more than 160 years. Since the tragic events of 9/11, we are no longer “afloat”, but are now land-based in our main Long Island City clinic, as well as several satellites in New York City homeless family shelters. We continue our pioneering tradition of providing New York City’s most vulnerable with the consistent, respectful holistic approach to ‘healthcare’ New Yorkers expect from their personal family physicians. We provide primary medical, dental, and mental healthcare services as well as optometry infectious disease and other specialties. Our relief work consist of the distribution of necessities and our free patient transportation service. Health education, another staple since 1866, rounds out our whole-family approach by teaching everything from how to cook on limited means, to socio-emotional learning and even a camp for homeless teens.
