General Summary
The Performance Innovation Leader partners with clinical and operational leaders across the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) to drive measurable, sustainable improvements. Under general supervision, this role leads performance improvement initiatives and value stream analyses to support the objectives of UMMC’s annual operating plan. The Performance Innovation Leader applies Lean Six Sigma tools and structured problem-solving methods and ensures sustainment of results. Additionally, this role mentors staff and leaders at all levels to build organizational capability in continuous improvement.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
1. Process Improvement and Operational Excellence
Lead and facilitate continuous improvement initiatives, including Rapid Process Improvement Workshops (RPIWs) and other Lean Six Sigma activities.
Identify, analyze, and improve operational processes through process redesign, root cause analysis, and implementation of evidence-based improvement methodologies.
Develop current-state and future-state workflows, establish performance baselines, and validate improvement outcomes.
Conduct observations and assessments to identify opportunities to reduce waste, improve efficiency, enhance quality, and optimize the customer and employee experience.
2. Data Analysis and Performance Measurement
Define, track, and report key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure project and operational success.
Analyze quantitative and qualitative data to identify trends, performance gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
Conduct benchmarking and best-practice reviews to support organizational performance goals.
3. Facilitation, Coaching, and Leadership Development
Facilitate cross-functional teams and stakeholder groups to achieve project objectives and drive sustainable change.
Coach, mentor, and train leaders and staff in Lean Six Sigma principles, continuous improvement methodologies, and problem-solving techniques.
Present project findings, recommendations, and progress updates to leadership and key stakeholders.
4. Project Management and Execution
Manage improvement projects from initiation through implementation, including project planning, stakeholder engagement, risk identification, and progress monitoring.
Develop and maintain project documentation, timelines, deliverables, and communication plans.
Monitor project performance, remove barriers to success, and ensure timely achievement of objectives.
5. Sustainment and Continuous Improvement Culture
Establish controls, monitoring processes, and accountability measures to sustain improvements and achieve long-term results.
Promote a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, collaboration, and respect for people across the organization.
Partner with leaders to identify and prioritize opportunities that support strategic, operational, and organizational goals.
6. Compliance and Governance
Ensure improvement initiatives comply with applicable regulations, accreditation standards, organizational policies, and governance requirements.
Work Experience
Bachelor's degree required; degree in engineering, healthcare administration, business, or related field preferred
Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification required; Black Belt certification preferred
Minimum four years of experience in process improvement, Lean, Six Sigma, or operational excellence
Healthcare experience strongly preferred; academic medical center experience a plus
Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional teams and facilitating improvement events
