Develop and edit content for a government customer's internal website while codifying business processes and standardizing methods. Collaborate with stakeholders and change managers to support site adoption and communicate progress through reporting.
Requirements
Requires at least 3 years of writing or editing experience and a Bachelor's degree, or 7 years of experience in lieu of a degree. Must be able to obtain a government security clearance and possess strong organizational and communication skills.
Full job description
Overview
As a Technical Writer, you'll be working with Federal Government clients and Steampunk team members to support a design-led team as we develop content for a new website on our customer's intranet. The role may also help to codify business processes, standardize methods and techniques, and provide documentation and business process improvement support.
Contributions
Responsibilities include:
Work collaboratively to write new content for an internal-facing website for a government customer. Some of this work will be expanding upon old content to bring it up to date and make it more detailed, and other work will be creating new content from scratch.
Review content that the government customer writes for the website, editing it for content and clarity.
Ability to collaborate effectively with government stakeholders (either within the stakeholder's agency or with other agencies) on the editing process, asking questions to solicit the right content.
Manage content trackers to ensure the content team is hitting the right milestones.
Produce reporting documentation to communicate progress, risks, and next steps to partners.
Support a Disruption Designer (change manager) with the rollout, branding, communication, and other adoption strategies for the new website.
Conduct interviews or other discovery as needed to frame pain points and opportunities; define problem statements; or shape the content.
Synthesize research and data and craft compelling stories and presentations to communicate insights and recommendations that will shape content, site transformation, and adoption
As needed, customize and tailor documentation to support business process standardization, accountability, and increased efficiency and effectiveness.
Identify areas of improvement that can be made in business processes and then work to document and implement those improvements within the program.
Writing and editing easy-to-understand documentation, online help, and guides to support use of the new website
Communicate effectively and decisively with all levels of the organization
Solve practical problems
Exercise sound judgement with regards to sensitive and confidential information.
Qualifications
Required:
At least 3 years of experience in a writing- or editing-heavy position
Ability to obtain a government security clearance
Ability to work independently or with other team members to capture requirements and translate into technical documentation
Advanced organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple assignments
Strong written and oral communication skills
Microsoft Office proficiency
Bachelor’s Degree or higher (may be substituted by 4 years of additional experience, requiring a total of 7 years of work experience, 4 of which must contain relevant writing and editing experience).
Preferred:
Experience in writing training documentation
Experience with change management
Developing other supporting technical writing products as needed by the technical teams and program managers (e.g., presentations, reports, charts, visual aids)
Preferred experience analyzing existing and potential content, focusing on reuse and single-sourcing opportunities, and creating and maintaining the information architectures.

When Steampunk Digital Consulting was established, we committed ourselves to the concept of providing our clients with Unfair Ideas, and we’ve been re-establishing ourselves every day since to deliver the Unfair Ideas that give our clients an unfair advantage. Because we believe that’s what this business requires: a fresh perspective, a new approach, and an interdependent group of people dedicated to taking on whatever new challenge or opportunity the day brings. That’s why we bring a holistic approach to marketing, gathering together the best of all disciplines under one roof. We understand that today’s modern companies need a creative partner that works the way they do: fast, open, and collaboratively. Which, done correctly, is itself a little unfair.
We truly believe in the transformative power of illustration and design and their ability to simplify communications, elevate experiences, engage and inspire people everywhere. Good design and good relationships come from collaboration.
