Full job description
We are looking for an enthusiastic and community-minded Parkland Management Planner I to join our Parks and Urban Forestry team. If you are passionate about protecting urban green spaces and shaping a sustainable environment, this is your opportunity to make a lasting impact.
As a Parkland Management Planner I, you will serve as a vital steward of Edmonton’s parkland, carefully balancing natural preservation with urban development. Reporting to the Parkland Management Planner II, you will ensure our green spaces remain sustainable, accessible, and resilient for all park users and engagement participants. In this role, you will act as a key facilitator and collaborative bridge between City departments, municipal authorities, and community partners. By reviewing development proposals and applying municipal policies, you will protect vital open spaces while supporting viable community growth. Your expertise will directly foster a shared sense of community ownership and long-term environmental stewardship across our city.
What will you do?
Review requests for development, redevelopment, and temporary use of City-zoned, owned, and maintained parkland to ensure safe, ongoing use and protection
Apply bylaws and planning strategies—such as the Public Spaces Bylaw 20700, Edmonton Zoning Bylaw, and the Breathe Strategy—to evaluate land-use compatibility
Educate project proponents and collaborators on Parks and Roads development and maintenance standards during virtual, written correspondence, and in-person meetings
Support the Planner II with complex, sensitive projects, joint-use land reviews, and community league development requests
Conduct thorough planning research and spatial analysis to provide accurate, tailored information for internal and external inquiries
Assist with project-related engagement activities involving the general public, interested and/or affected parties, and Indigenous Nations and communities
Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or a degree related directly to the functions of the position
A minimum of two (2) years of related planning experience. Candidates with less than two (2) years of experience may be considered at the opportunity concept level
Assets:
Eligibility for membership, or current status as a member in good standing, with the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI)
Skills required for success:
Strong foundational knowledge of land use planning, parks planning, urban design, and applicable municipal or provincial legislation
Proficiency with research methodologies, quantitative analysis, and geospatial/information management software (such as GIS)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a proven ability to explain technical planning expectations to diverse audiences
Exceptional prioritization and workload management skills to successfully meet tight municipal and provincial timelines
Strong collaborative and negotiation skills to bridge differing specialties and align them with corporate priorities
Political awareness and analytical thinking to formulate sound, evidence-based planning recommendations
