What You'll Do:

Performs responsible professional work in the Public Library providing adult reference service and related activities in the Business Research Services Unit of the Research Services Division; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a senior Librarian. This is a non-supervisory position.

Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:

Essential Tasks

• Provides reference and research assistance to patrons in person and by telephone, utilizing print, digital, and online library resources with an emphasis on business and nonprofit-related topics.
• Assists patrons with library technology, including mobile devices, online catalogs, computerized periodical indexes, and photocopiers.
• Supports job seekers by assisting with job searches, online applications, and related resources.
• Participates in collection development by evaluating community needs and selecting books and other materials for the Business Collection and other assigned subject areas.
• Reviews professional publications, advertisements, and other selection tools to recommend and order library materials.
• Develops, coordinates, and presents a variety of library programs, workshops, and outreach initiatives for the Greater High Point community.
• Assists the unit supervisor with planning and delivering public programs as assigned.
• Builds and maintains collaborative partnerships with local businesses, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and community groups to expand library services and outreach.
• Assists in developing and delivering training for staff and the public on business-related software applications, library resources, and emerging technologies.
• Prepares instructional materials, guides, and presentations to support training and educational initiatives.
• Assumes responsibility for the daily operation of the unit, in consultation with the Division Head, during the supervisor's absence.
• Monitors and reports issues with public computer equipment, technology, and photocopiers to ensure reliable service.
• Compiles and publishes research guides, bibliographies, and informational materials, and may prepare articles related to business and nonprofit resources for publication.
• Ensures all work is performed in accordance with OSHA regulations and City safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree in library and information science (MLIS or equivalent).
• Must possess, or be eligible to obtain, North Carolina Public Libraries Certification.
• A valid driver's license is required, along with the ability and willingness to operate City fleet vehicles.
• A cover letter and resume are required for consideration.
• Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
• Demonstrated proficiency with computers and current technology, including smartphones, smartboards, word processing applications, database management systems, and other relevant software.
• Ability to maintain current knowledge of computer software and emerging technologies applicable to library services.
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with the public, coworkers, and supervisors.
• Ability to read, interpret, and utilize library records, reference materials, and computerized library systems.
• Thorough knowledge of library principles, practices, procedures, and materials.
• Working knowledge of reference services and a variety of reference resources, including business reference materials.
• General knowledge of reader interests, authors, and literature to support readers' advisory services.
• Ability to evaluate library programs and services and recommend or implement improvements.
• Ability to develop supervisory, organizational, and time management skills.
• Strong listening skills and the ability to follow written and oral instructions

Preferred Qualifications

• One (1) to two (2) years of experience working in a North Carolina Public Library.

Physical Requirements

Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens, and applicants.

Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:

• Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Both eyes 20/22 - R 20/25 - L 20/25 corrected. Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Both eyes 20/25 corrected.
• Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Depth Perception - 4
• Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
• Accommodation – Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye.

Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors.

• Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see from a distance when administering and observing employment tests, operating a motor vehicle, or addressing an audience.
• Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see work-related business documents close at hand.
• Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
• Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
• Accommodation – Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly.
• All five aspects are judged to be important in carrying out the essential functions of this job.

• Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Ability to direct and oversee the use of arithmetic and/or statistics in the preparation of a variety of tests and reports.

Language Ability:

• The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position.
• Read: Ability to read manuals, instructions, directions, report information, calendars, recording forms, file documentation, vouchers, correspondence, and various other documents relating to the job.
• Write: Ability to write memos and figures, take messages and make various reports.
• Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions with supervisor, other employees, and the general public in person, and by telephone.
