Responsibilities
The Senior Video Journalist will independently manage all aspects of video production, including research, shooting, editing, and publishing. They will also pitch coverage opportunities, respond to breaking news, and mentor junior staff members.
Requirements
Candidates must have extensive professional experience in digital video newsrooms and a proven track record of covering breaking news in complex environments. Strong editorial judgment, technical proficiency in video production, and the ability to manage field crews are essential.
Full job description
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
The New York Times is continuing to expand its video journalism, identifying compelling visual stories across the depth and breadth of our report. We share urgent news updates, produce on-the-ground reporting and pioneering Visual Investigations, and showcase the expertise of Times reporters around the world.
We are looking for a Senior Video Journalist to focus on breaking and continuing news coverage in a range of visual formats, from short-form videos to multimedia articles to groundbreaking interactives.
You are an experienced reporter and international field producer who thrives in a fast-paced news environment and has a track record of deploying to cover high-stakes stories around the world. You are a gifted storyteller, both with the camera and in the editing room, who can efficiently juggle multiple projects at a time. You are a self-starter and quick thinker who is able and eager to jump on top stories with fresh ideas for original visual news coverage. We are looking for an idea generator, who’s constantly pitching stories and developing sources, as well as someone with impeccable news instincts, ethics and judgement. You should be eager to collaborate with other journalists and feature them on camera.
You should be able to work independently, secure access and deliver impactful and immediate reporting that drives the story forward.
Please note, this is not an entry-level position and it is not a position for someone who is interested in producing documentaries.
This is an in-office position based in London and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities:
Expertly and independently carry out all aspects of video production, including research, reporting, writing, shooting, producing, editing and publishing.
Consistently pitch coverage opportunities, and help manage big projects in a range of formats, including linear videos and interactives, and overseeing the work of others as needed.
Respond to breaking news events, and producing original video stories, both remotely and in the field.
Use wire services, on the ground sources, social media and other open source tools to find and verify newsworthy video footage.
Set up and monitor live video feeds, as needed.
Produce high-quality video journalism quickly and independently, while also guiding and mentoring more junior staff members as they develop and report original story ideas.
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
This role reports to a Senior Producer, Video.
Basic Qualifications:
Proven deep journalism experience in a digital video newsroom.
Extensive professional experience in all aspects of the video production process, including strong writing and reporting skills.
Expert working knowledge of U.S. and international news events, with a proven track record covering breaking news around the world. Emphasis will be on Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Experience in reporting and producing video in complex news environments, such as conflict zones or other hostile environments, under the pressure of tight deadlines in the field.
Strong editorial judgment and writing skills, with a passion for finding original, visual journalism opportunities in competitive news moments.
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to supervise other video journalists and schedules, direct field crews, and hire and manage freelancers when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Canon video camera systems and the ability to shoot video in the field and in-studio.
Expertise in shooting and editing in Premiere Pro.
Experience with UGC verification.
Foreign language skills.
A broad network of well-placed story sources and production contacts, both in the U.S. and internationally.
General knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for third-party and acquired visuals, and the ability to find exclusive images to help drive our reporting.
Willingness and flexibility to travel on short notice, and also work evenings and weekends as needed.
Strong time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple assignments at a time.
Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others, including, often, correspondents in the field.

For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process.
Candidate Use of GenAI Tools:
