Candidates need at least 2 years of experience working with low-income women in inner-city environments and knowledge of issues like gender-based violence and addiction. Proficiency in IT, social media, and the ability to obtain First Aid and NVCI certifications are required.
The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC) exists to support and empower women and children, living in extreme poverty in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, who are particularly vulnerable to violence, exploitation, injustice and injury. Through low barrier Drop-In Centers and Emergency Shelters, DEWC provides basic need services, programs, and specialized supports to over 1000 women and children daily to help them survive the conditions that surround them. The Cultural Programmer is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of cultural, recreational, social and/or educational programs that are consistent with the mission and mandate of the DEWC. Her responsibility will include working with DEWC members ensuring relevant programming that maximizes their decision making and participation. Reporting directly to the Manager of Programs, the Cultural Programmer will work in collaboration with other DEWC staff to promote integrated services to women. She will work from a feminist perspective and within an anti-oppression framework
Healthcare: Extended health & dental coverage including vision; prescription medications; alternative therapies; EAP; life insurance; and long-term disability premium is covered by the Organization.
Paid time off: 3 weeks paid vacation in the 1st year, 4 weeks after 1 year; 13 paid statutory holidays; 12 paid sick days annually; and access to time off to handle family or personal situations.
For Retirement: Enrolled in the Municipal Pension Plan with a matching contribution from DEWC.

The mission of the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre (DEWC) is to provide a safe, non-judgmental, low-barrier environment for women (cis, trans), two-spirit and gender diverse people from all walks of life, who live and/or work in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. To achieve this goal, DEWC provides support by serving meals, crisis response, advocacy and outreach programs which nurture and empower the approximately 900 people who access our services every day. Founded in 1978, DEWC is one of the few safe spaces within the Downtown Eastside exclusively for all women, their children and gender diverse folks. High levels of violence, homelessness, addiction, and poverty disproportionately affect the Downtown Eastside community. The people who access our services are particularly vulnerable to exploitation, injustice, and injury. Located in one of Canada's most marginalized communities, DEWC assists women and gender diverse people with their immediate needs to they can develop stability and access resources they need to improve health, family, employment, and housing situations. We promote positive change by offering individual long-term support, advocacy, peer mentorship, and access to alternatives.
