Responsibilities

The Kitchen Trainer is responsible for planning, preparing, and serving nutritious meals in a drop-in center and emergency shelter. They also support the training of community volunteers in all kitchen operations while collaborating with staff to provide integrated services.

Requirements

Candidates need at least 2 years of related experience, preferably in a shelter environment, and knowledge of issues impacting vulnerable women. Required certifications include Food Safe, First Aid, and NVCI.

Kitchen Trainer

About DEWC

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC) exists to support and empower women and children, living in extreme poverty in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, who are particularly vulnerable to violence, exploitation, injustice and injury.  Through low barrier Drop-In Centers and Emergency Shelters, DEWC provides basic need services, programs, and specialized supports to over 700 women and children daily to help them survive the conditions that surround them.  See website (www.dewc.ca) for details on our mission and mandate as well as programs and services.   

 The Opportunity

The Kitchen Trainer is primarily responsible for providing a nutritious meal within a busy and chaotic drop-in centre and/or emergency night shelter including meal planning and preparation, serving, cleaning and maintenance, customer service skills, stock taking and ordering.   She will participate in supporting a relevant training program for community volunteers in all aspects of the kitchen. Reporting to the Kitchen Manager, she will collaborate with other DEWC staff to promote integrated services to women.  She will work from a feminist perspective and within an anti-oppression framework. 

 About You

  • You have a minimum of 2 years related experience preferable within a drop in and/or shelter environment.   
  • You will promote and articulate the mission, mandate, philosophy, and values of DEWC.
  • You are knowledgeable of the issues impacting women in the dtes, including gender-based violence, mental health, homelessness, and addictions with an understanding of trauma-informed care responses.  
  • You have the ability to work calmly and respectfully within a busy, chaotic, crisis driven environment where there are multiple demands and prioritize.
  • You have strong conflict resolution skills and demonstrate crises intervention training and experience
  • You have, or will obtain, a First Aid Certification, Food Safe, and NVCI.

  • Hourly Rate: $30.22
  • Location: 302 Columbia street
  • Schedule: Week 1: Friday to Tuesday (8am – 430pm) Week 2: Friday to Monday (8am – 4:00pm)
