JOB DESCRIPTION

Employment status and working hours

Fixed term for 10 months, part time for a total of 200 hours for the duration of the contract period – hours will vary week on week to allow for flexibility, however you will be provided with a clear timetable for all face to face teaching/tutoring.

Full time hours at the University are 35 per week with the standard working pattern Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00. At LSA, the weekly working pattern is Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:00.

Education and Students, London School of Architecture.

Your line manager will be Dr Ruth Lang, March Programme Leader, with oversight from Lee Ivett, Head of School.

Place of work flexibility

The majority of your working time will be spent at The London School of Architecture (The LSA) office at 4 Beechwood Road, London, E8 3DY and the rest may be at your home. Whilst it is a requirement for all academic teaching/tutoring and meetings to take place at Beechwood Road, other scholarly, administrative and preparatory activities may be completed remotely. Working from home is only possible if your environment is suitable.

High level summary of job role

The Design Studio Tutor (Lecturer) plays a key role in delivering an engaging and high-quality learning experience that supports student success. Working closely with Module and Programme Leaders, you will lead interactive workshops, tutorials, and reviews that encourage participation, curiosity, and critical thinking. You will actively monitor student engagement and wellbeing, providing timely, constructive formative and summative feedback to support development and progress. You will contribute to the effective delivery and continuous improvement of modules through collaboration, accurate record-keeping, and participation in assessment and moderation processes. Your insights will help enhance teaching quality and the overall student experience.

Committed to professional growth, you will engage in ongoing development and required training, staying current with best practice. By working closely with academic and support teams, you will help create a supportive, inclusive environment where students feel confident to succeed and realise their potential.

The LSA offers an innovative model of architectural education, combining studio-based learning with embedded professional experience. We are a small school with a big mission, currently offering a single academic programme: a two-year postgraduate MArch in Designing Architecture. The Programme is prescribed by the Architects Registrations Board and validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects. The LSA also runs community and outreach programmes for young people.

In May 2025, The LSA merged with University of the Built Environment (the University). The University is a leading specialist university for the built environment and The LSA will retain its name and distinct identity. Specific job role accountabilities and responsibilities

Module delivery (student facing)

• Support the delivery of the module, participating in workshops, tutoring sessions, and reviews, as required by the Module Leader to facilitate interaction with and engagement by students.

• Engage with associated learning resources to stimulate student activity and engagement.

• Monitor student wellbeing in module groups, addressing any concerns sensitively and effectively in collaboration with the Programme Leader and Academic and Student Support teams.

• Provide the student cohort with regular feedback on their contributions - both informally during sessions, and with written feedback following Formative and Summative assessment points.

Module delivery (management)

• Participate in regular meetings with the Module Leaders.

• Notify any student engagement problems to the Programme Leader for action.

• Support the maintenance of accurate records of attendance in collaboration with the Academic and Student Support teams.

• Assist with ensuring that alternative arrangements are in place in the event of any Tutor not being able to deliver their allocated teaching.

• Contribute to programme processes such as Validation and External Examination visits, as required by the Programme Leader.

• Provide feedback to the Module Leader for incorporation into any module updates, to maintain and enhance the quality of delivery and an engaging student learning experience.

• Be on time for all timetabled teaching sessions.

Management of assessments

• Follow guidance on the marking strategy for the relevant assessments.

• Complete assignment marking allocated to you in time scales provided.

• Contribute to the moderation procedures in collaboration with the Module Leader.

• Provide guidance to students on reflecting on their feedback and how to feed forward their learning to other assessments.

Other important features of the job role

Continuing professional development (CPD) and staff development activities: In agreement with, and as directed by, your line manager, to maintain and enhance professional experience and commitment to subject specific and teaching skills development.

Keeping abreast of Business-as-Usual changes and updates: Reading communications sent via the Bulletins, other emails and webinar updates.

Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) criminal record check: Due to the nature of the working environment and to safeguard any children or young people on premises, you will need to undergo an Enhanced DBS check with the Children's Barred List. Qualifications and training

GCSE Maths and English language Grade C or 4 or above (E, A).

Undergraduate degree in architecture or aligned subject area (E, A).

Postgraduate degree in architecture or aligned subject area (E, A).

Membership of a professional body or association aligned with the architecture subject area (D, A).

PhD in a relevant field (D, A).

Previous experience

Experience of architecture subject delivery and tutoring in an academic context (E, A, I).

Evidence of impact and esteem within architectural practice or research (D, A, I).

Digital skills confidence: We use MS Office which includes Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and several other systems/technology (E, A).

You must be prepared to undertake mandatory online training should you be appointed. PAY AND BENEFITS

Salary: Actual basic salary for the duration of the contract £4,946 per annum (£45,000 Full Time Equivalent).

Holiday: Rolled-up holiday equivalent to 182 hours holiday (rising to 196 hours with service) plus bank/public holidays plus up to five closure days (typically between Christmas and New Year); all per holiday year Full Time Equivalent. Our holiday year runs from 1 August to 31 July. We also have a holiday buy and sell scheme in place, however given the rolled-up method of holiday pay, the holiday buy/sell benefit will not apply to you.

Pension and life assurance: Pensions auto-enrolment to the Universities Superannuation Scheme which is a default salary sacrifice scheme. You may opt out of salary sacrifice but remain in the scheme, or you may choose to opt out altogether. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria for auto enrolment, you may still be able to join. We also provide life assurance (death in service) cover as standard to all employees.

Founded in 2015, The LSA was the country’s first new independent architecture school for over 150 years. The LSA was set up as a positive and proactive response to issues in higher education that led to fewer students completing or continuing into the architectural profession.
