Compensation: $29.50 to $32.64 per hour
Schedule: 40 hours per week with one weekend day per week required. Operations are Sun-Sat, 7:00am-7:00pm.
Location: This position is 100% in person, primarily located at 2650 Senter Road, San Jose, CA 95111.
Travel: Local travel may be required up to 80% of the time.

One of the first urban conservation corps in the country, the San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School was founded in 1987 to empower young adults aged 18 to 27 ("Corpsmembers") to upskill themselves and advance their career in conservation and green spaces. Today, SJCC+CS continues to operate its 1-year-long paid workforce development program, while also functioning as a WASC-accredited charter high school, allowing those who have aged
out of the traditional education system to earn their high school diploma.

Position Summary

This position will primarily operate out of parks located in Menlo Park and will be responsible for trail patrol, littler abatement, weed abatement, refilling pet waste stations, reporting when restrooms need attention and engaging with the public on park use. This engagement will encompass park interpretation as well as enforcing city ordinances regarding park use.

In addition, the supervisor implements the mission of SJCC+CS by using their leadership, supervisory and technical skills to develop the educational and work skills of young people while preserving the natural landscape of our community. The crew supervisor is responsible for the oversight of various environmental field projects in city and county parks, which may include trail maintenance, invasive species removal, native habitat restoration, beautification, fire fuel reduction, and more. The supervisor is responsible for a team of 1-9 job training Corpsmembers aged 18 to 27.

Job Duties

General

Transport crew to the job site with equipment trailer in tow
Work on projects that include some of the following trades: Landscaping, trail maintenance, new trail construction,
in-stream enhancement, eradicating non-native plant species, fire fuel reduction, roadside maintenance and safety.
Communicate with the project sponsor, sub-contractor, or contractor
Organize, direct, and lead a crew of Corpsmembers to work efficiently to complete projects in the allotted timeframe, ensuring a high quality of work
Determine manpower levels, material quantities, and equipment requirements for each project
Ensure that SJCC+CS policies are upheld and followed on the job site.
Collaborate with program staff
Participate in spike, backcountry, and emergency response expeditions as needed.
Represent the Parks and Recreation Department and SJCC with courtesy and professionalism
Engage with users of parks as a park interpreter
Enforce city park ordinances by both public education and citations

Administration & Safety

Complete and upload Corpsmember disciplinary action as needed, and monthly Corpsmember evaluations
Complete and submit daily reports, including attendance, safety tailgates, pre and post trip vehicle inspections, end of day report
Oversee maintenance of vehicles, keys, gas cards, and registration papers.
Conduct tailgate safety meetings on a daily basis and after all work-related accidents, keeping a written record of each meeting
Assure that Corpsmembers wear proper safety gear at all times
Take appropriate safety precautions in the performance of job duties
Complete paperwork for every accident reported, assure that Corpsmembers work safely at all times
Communicate vehicle/work-related injuries to the Project Director
Identify common safety hazards
Read and understand product labels

Corpsmember Development

Be a mentor/role model to Corpsmembers while training them skills in different trades
Build a good rapport with each Corpsmember
Assist Corpsmembers in defining goals and creating a plan to reach those goals
Provide constant feedback on Corpsmembers performance including monthly evaluations
Consistently apply discipline and accountability as necessary
Train Corpsmembers in proper work ethic, attitude, and personal appearance
Implement and monitor the Corpsmember education and training plan related to technical and personal skills needed to complete service assignments, including the required training in CPR/First Aid, communication, and conflict resolution

Work Environment & Requirements
Position requires sitting, standing, balancing or walking on uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, reaching overhead and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment, plus the ability to speak and to hear. The ability to lift, carry, push and pull tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required. The incumbent in this position works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. In the course of work the incumbent may be exposed to biologic or infectious agents, unpleasant odors, fumes, smoke, dust and air contaminants, and insects. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to use power, vibration, and noise-producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work near moving equipment, vehicles or machinery, work on ladders or scaffolding or at heights. The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing, equipment, or devices, and may work near hostile or offensive individuals. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

Equipment Used: The incumbent of this position will be utilizing various power tools, equipment, and Company vehicles. Vehicles include mainly passenger vans, and occasionally a pickup truck with a trailer or flat bed with the proper training.

Employment At-Will

The San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School is an “At-Will” employer. This means that employment with SJCC+CS is voluntarily entered into and staff members are free to resign at any time. Similarly, SJCC+CS may terminate the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause or prior notice, as it deems appropriate. This at-will employment
relationship can be changed only in a written agreement signed by the staff member and the Executive Director of SJCC+CS.

SJCC+CS IS A MANDATORY COVID-19 VACCINATION EMPLOYER

If a new hire is in the process of being vaccinated, their start date may be adjusted to a future date after they have been vaccinated. A CA Guard Card is required. If selected, the incumbent must either have or acquire a California Guard Card within 15 days

Associate's degree from an accredited U.S. college or higher.
Possession of Passenger Endorsement, or commitment to obtaining one within six months of hire.
Possession of S-212 certification, or commitment to obtaining one within six months of hire.
1 year of supervisory experience or equivalent experience that demonstrates the ability to work in team-oriented settings and lead others.
1 year of field experience in any of the following: landscaping, trail maintenance and construction, vegetation management, tree maintenance and care, invasive species treatment, habitat restoration.
Experience operating relevant tools and their corresponding safety equipment, such as chainsaws, weed whackers, and hedgers.
1 year of professional experience driving with passengers.
The ability to solve problems in the field with minimal assistance.
Strong commitment to improving the quality of life for urban youth.
The ability to use, and teach others to use, power and hand tools safely.
Knowledge of safe work practices.
First aid/CPR certification.
The ability to maintain detailed records and documentation.
Customer Service Experience - able to identify and resolve customer concerns.
Computer literate.

Driving Record and Requirements: The incumbent will drive one or more company vehicles as an essential function of this position. If the position is offered and accepted, candidates must submit a copy of their DMV driver’s record and the record must be acceptable to our auto insurance. The candidate also must possess and continue to maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license and a clean driving record.

Medical Verification: State law requires all employees working with youth to provide medical verification of negative tuberculosis test results within the last year. Background Check and Fingerprinting: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates will be required to undergo Live Scan Fingerprinting as well as a background check, which includes a state and federal criminal history record check.

Drug Screen: all new hires are required to undergo and pass a 5-panel drug screen.

Preferred Qualifications

Adult Vocational teaching Credential – Landscaping.
Bi-lingual (English and any other language).
Degree from an accredited 2 or 4-year college in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Biology, or similar field.
Possession of any of the following certifications: Wilderness First Responder, OSHA 30 or OSHA Train the Trainer, CPR Instructor, Crosscut Chainsaw.
Experience driving with flatbeds and trailers.
