The Vehicle Driver I operates and maintains the motor vehicles on location, transporting cargo and passengers on short and long-distance trips.  Generally, the Vehicle Driver I is the frontline of meal delivery to the food service team which ensures proper meal service and sanitation requirements for all residents.   This includes transporting the food carts to the units/homes promptly and in a sanitary manner to the correct location. Assumes the duties of a food service worker when short staffed or assigned. Has no supervisory or financial responsibilities but is accountable for assigned vehicles, preparing and maintaining forms or records pertaining to vehicle operations and ensuring vehicles are scheduled for general maintenance. This person works under the general supervision of a Cook or Food Service Manager, depending on SSLC structure, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Completion of work requires the use of established methods and/or techniques and decisions are varied but based on well-defined guidelines.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Operates motor vehicles such as vans and trucks and trailers and transports passengers, cargo, and food carts.  Performs physical parts of job including requirements of standing for long periods of time, carrying, pushing and lifting of items more than 45 lbs. Drives a state vehicle with delivery trailer attached.

Delivers food, supplemental formulas, and beverages to dormitories/homes/units on a predetermined schedule or as needed, and picks up carts after each meal to meet the nutritional needs of consumers. Manages time and follows scheduled routes.

Stores and make frozen food breakouts to meet weekly requirements of food items for menu. Stores food items in freezers and chill boxes using proper rotation procedures and perfroms food breakout ensuring proper thawing.

Restocks dining rooms with cleaning materials, utensils and other supplies to ensure proper serving equipment and sanitation materials are available.

Checks vehicle and trailer at beginning of work shift for proper operation and cleanliness and reports major problems to the supervisor to ensure delivery capabilities.

Prepares and maintains records and logs related to vehicle operations and breakouts.

Performs basic vehicle maintenance, makes minor repairs, and fuels vehicles. Accomplishes daily operator maintenance before, during and after each trip as evidenced by no reports from motor pool showing maintenance problems.

Ensures that vehicle cargo/food cart capacity is not exceeded, driver and passengers use safety restraints, and cargo/food carts are distributed to reduce maximum axle loading.

Secures and protects cargo/food carts.  Complies with state and local traffic laws as evidenced by no citations.

Assists in the safe loading and unloading of passengers, cargo/food carts. 

Operates vehicle power lift gates, manual hydraulic forklifts, and dollies. 

Assists in performing warehouse and food server work.  Performs general cooking, food handling, and serving techniques. Uses chemicals and commercial detergent for dishwashers, floor, etc. relating to food services/housekeeping operation. Performs basic math calculations related to this work.

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge and understanding of traffic safety regulations.

Knowledge of Food Service preparation, serving and cleaning procedures.

Skill to maneuver large trucks into tight areas safely.

Ability to tell time and work on a schedule.

Ability to understand and to comply with written and oral instructions. 

Ability to manage time and follow scheduled routes.

Ability to communicate with others in a cooperative and positive manner.

Ability to work in a physically challenging environment.

Ability to tolerate cold and hot weather conditions.

Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language.

Able to repeatedly lift 45 pounds.

Ability to do basic math computations.

Ability to accurately backup trailers.

Ability to successfully complete all Safe Use of Restraints(SUR) and Ukeru training as prescribed by the Texas Health and Human Services.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:

Must possess valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.

Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.

Texas Department of Public Safety Commercial Driver's License preferred.  

Food Handlers certification is preferred.

Completion of Defensive Driving class is required.

Initial Screening Criteria:

Prior work experience operating a motor vehicle with multiple passengers and/or transporting cargo is required, six (6) months is preferred.

Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is preferred.

Experience in driving a light and/or medium delivery truck is preferred.

Paid or unpaid experience in food service work is preferred.

One year experience operating a motor vehicle in a commercial environment is preferred.

Additional Information:

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/ Entities (LEIE).

Males between the ages of 18 – 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to Random Drug Testing.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
