The Opportunity: The Technical Officer provides specialist technical and operational support to teaching and research within the School of Biomedical Engineering, with a focus on mechanical and electronic expertise including laser technologies, additive manufacturing (3D printing), micromanufacturing, embedded electronics, and biomedical device development.
We are looking for a Technical Officer who thrives on connection — someone engaged, welcoming and energised by working with people. Full Time (35 hours)
Fixed term for 1 year (potential for extension)
Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia (on campus requirement)
Salary, Level 6: $103,866 - $110,801 per annum + 17% superannuation [Level 7 is available for the right candidate: $113,926 - $123,301 plus super]

Sitting at the intersection of technology and human biology, Biomedical Engineering applies the latest developments in computing, robotics and nanotechnology to medicine. A Biomedical Engineer analyses and designs solutions to problems in biology and medicine to improve patients' lives.
Skills & Experience:
Level 6 -
Relevant qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronics Engineering or equivalent experience.
Demonstrated experience in at least two of: Additive manufacturing / 3D printing, Laser systems (operation and safety), Micromanufacturing / microfabrication, Electronics assembly and instrumentation
Experience supporting engineering prototyping and fabrication workflows.
Knowledge of WHS requirements for high-risk equipment (e.g. lasers, electrical systems, fabrication tools).
Ability to maintain specialist laboratory equipment and infrastructure.
Experience developing safe work procedures and managing laboratory risks.
Experience delivering training and competency assessment.
Ability to supervise casual staff and manage laboratory access and scheduling.
Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
Level 7 (in addition to the above) –
Advanced specialist knowledge and substantial experience across mechanical, electrical and/or manufacturing laboratory environments.
Demonstrated ability to operate with high levels of autonomy and professional judgement.
Demonstrated ability to improve the capability of lab users.
Proven experience providing expert technical advice influencing research and development outcomes.
Experience supporting medical device development and/or preclinical testing workflows.
Demonstrated leadership in laboratory training, competency frameworks, and continuous improvement.
Experience in risk management and compliance in high-risk engineering environments
Progression statement:
The incumbent will normally be expected to have reached the top step of level 6 prior to progression to level 7. Criteria for progression to level 7 will be based on satisfactory performance of all duties and accountabilities at level 6 and a demonstrated capacity to take on the duties and accountabilities of the position at level 7.
