Overview
Perform and interpret routine diagnostic microbiological, virological, serological, chemical, immunohematological, hematological or biophysical procedures in all areas and performs and interprets routine diagnostic serology procedures. Responsibilities are governed by pertinent New York State Licensing and the New York City Department of Health Regulations.
Responsibilities
May work independently and on occasion may examine and approve the work of technicians when requested.
Conduct routine microbiological laboratory procedures in all pertinent areas of the laboratory including the reading of plates, identification of microorganisms, and antibiotic susceptibility testing of suspected pathogens.
Test and repeat tests when results are questionable and informs the Supervisor of any unusual isolates.
Judge the adequacy of submitted specimens and requests additional specimens if necessary.
Modify work patterns to accommodate the daily work load.
Perform routine tests that include mycology including specimen planting and identification. Interprets gram stains, india ink, and KOH preparations. Also, routine AFB work including specimen processing, staining, and identification.
Perform routine parasitology work including specimen processing, staining procedures, and parasite identification.
Write reports with all reports must being signed by the issuing technologist.
Report STAT reports by calling the appropriate nursing station or responsible individual for the patient.
Perform Quality Control procedures. These forms must be signed and dated by the technologist performing the function. Supervisors must be notified of out of control results.
Perform routine and special serology procedures. Procedures must be learned and mastered as they are added.
Carry out CAP and other proficiency survey specimens as assigned and completes them on schedule.
Perform all necessary preventive maintenance and maintenance requirements. Notify the Supervisor immediately if the instrument malfunctions. All actions taken must be noted and initiated in the appropriate log book.
Sign all log books, report forms, and worksheets for assays he/she is responsible in carrying out.
Maintain adequate supply of materials/reagents for all assays he/she will perform.
Keep area free of all safety hazards and is obligated to inform his/her Supervisor of all safety infractions in the work area.
Performs clerical duties relating to laboratory’s proper functioning, such as, logging results, transcriptions, telephone answering, and reporting values by phone. All telephone reports will be documented in accordance with laboratory procedures.
Understand and practice the principles of safety associated with working in a microbiology laboratory. Knowledgeable in regards to the safe handling, processing, disposal of microbiological material, and other generated bio-hazards.
Promote good public relations by polite and professional interaction with all patients and Hospital staff.
Performs other duties as requested.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory technology from a program registered by the NYS Office of Professions or an approved substantial equivalent as deemed by NYS.
Experience:
No experience required but must possess license.
Procedures performed must be performed according to laboratory specifications.
Knowledge and Skills:
At times, may function without supervision exercising limited independent judgment.
Ability to write clear, concise reports.
Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.
Licenses, Certifications:
New York State Licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
Physical Requirements:
Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
