Clinical Trials Assistant
Summary
The Clinical Trials Assistant supports the clinical research team by helping identify veterinary patients who may be eligible for approved clinical trials. Working alongside veterinarians and the research team, this role reviews scheduled appointments, laboratory results, and medical records to help identify potential study candidates for further evaluation by the clinical trials team.
This position also provides administrative and clinical support for ongoing research studies while assisting with patient care in a veterinary hospital setting. The role offers opportunities to learn research procedures and clinical trial operations through training and hands-on experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform all duties in accordance with hospital policies, study protocols, and applicable regulations.
Prepare and maintain examination rooms and treatment areas.
Review upcoming patient appointments and medical information to identify patients who may meet study eligibility criteria.
Notify the clinical trials team of potential study candidates for review by the study veterinarian or investigator.
Maintain familiarity with active clinical trials and their eligibility requirements.
Support Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards in the conduct of research studies.
Assist veterinarians and study personnel during appointments and research visits.
Learn and follow study protocols and electronic data capture systems.
Communicate professionally with pet owners regarding approved clinical studies and protocol-required follow-up.
Coordinate with study sponsors, contract research organizations, and research partners as directed.
Maintain study supplies, investigational products, and inventory records.
Participate in required training related to clinical research and hospital procedures. (Required training is compensated.)
File study documentation, resolve data queries, and assist with maintaining accurate research records.
Prepare laboratory samples for shipment according to study requirements.
Under appropriate training and supervision, assist with administering medications and treatments as permitted by hospital policy and applicable regulations.
Under supervision, assist with collecting diagnostic samples and performing basic laboratory procedures.
Under supervision, assist with obtaining diagnostic images and non-invasive patient measurements.
Assist with patient admissions and discharges and provide client education as directed by the veterinary team.
Learn about commonly prescribed medications, preventatives, and therapeutic diets to assist with client education.
Support other hospital team members as needed.
Maintain accurate medical and research records.
Provide compassionate, professional care to patients and exceptional service to clients.
Maintain professional appearance and conduct.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
College coursework, associate's degree, bachelor's degree, or Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) credential preferred but not required.
Previous veterinary hospital, animal care, or clinical research experience is preferred.

Computer Skills
Experience with Microsoft Office is preferred. Familiarity with veterinary practice management software, including Impromed or similar systems, is beneficial but not required.
Travel
Minimal travel may occasionally be required.
Physical Requirements
This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and speaking. Employees should be able to routinely lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally assist with lifting larger animals with team assistance.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a veterinary hospital and clinical research setting. Employees may be exposed to anesthetic gases, animal odors, noise, blood and other biological materials, animal waste, contagious diseases, and the risk of animal bites or scratches. Appropriate training and personal protective equipment are provided in accordance with hospital policies.
