Full job description
A bit about Smartly
We exist to make it simpler for Kiwi businesses to look after their people.
We're known as the simple way to sort payroll for more than 22,000 businesses across New Zealand. Our software, combined with our awesome support team, helps businesses pay their people accurately, on time, and in line with legislation.
But we're about much more than payroll.
We're on a mission to help businesses better manage and support their people, and we're continuing to invest in new products and experiences that make life easier for employers and employees.
As part of Datacom, one of Australasia's largest technology companies, we combine the agility and culture of a growth business with the backing, scale, and opportunities of a larger organisation.
The Opportunity
We're looking for a smart and savvy Product Manager to help shape the future of Smartly.
You'll own a key product area, working closely with customers, designers, engineers, and stakeholders to solve customer problems and deliver meaningful outcomes.
You'll balance strategic thinking with hands-on delivery and help drive the next phase of growth for our products.
This role can be based anywhere in New Zealand, with options to work remotely, hybrid, or from one of our offices.
What You'll Be Doing
Get close to customers and the business to understand what's working, what isn't, and where we can make the biggest difference.
Turn insights into action by identifying opportunities, testing ideas, and helping shape the right solutions.
Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, using AI, data, and customer feedback to learn quickly and improve continuously.
Deliver value incrementally, adapting as you learn rather than following a fixed plan.
Bring people together to solve problems, make decisions, and keep initiatives moving.
Help improve how we work by sharing knowledge, challenging assumptions, and finding better ways to deliver outcomes.
What We're Looking For
You'll likely bring:
Product Management experience within a SaaS or technology environment
Strong customer empathy and a passion for solving problems
Experience developing product roadmaps and managing priorities
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Strong analytical and decision-making capability
Experience working with Agile teams and delivery practices
Curiosity, initiative, and a continuous improvement mindset
The ability to learn quickly, experiment, challenge assumptions, and adapt in a fast-moving environment
A growth mindset and curiosity to explore AI, emerging technologies, and new ways of working to improve customer outcomes.
Bonus points if you've worked in payroll, HR, workforce management, fintech, or other regulated software environments.
What You'll Get
Flexible working with a hybrid model for Auckland and Wellington-based team members, and fully remote options elsewhere in New Zealand.
Wellness allowance and birthday leave
Access to Datacom employee benefits and development opportunities
A collaborative and supportive Product team
The opportunity to work on products that make a real difference to thousands of businesses and employees
An awesome company culture where we love a massive morning tea, an epic work party, and the occasional rolling lunch
A team that genuinely cares about its people and wants to see them thrive
Why Smartly?
We're a team of smart, curious, and passionate people who care deeply about our customers and each other.
If you're excited about building great products, exploring new ideas, leveraging emerging technologies like AI, and helping shape the future of payroll and people management software in New Zealand, we'd love to hear from you.
Apply now with your CV and a cover letter telling us why you'd like to join Smartly.
Customer focused values. World-class capability.
The right solutions to help you navigate, wherever you are on your journey.
With a breadth of offerings and depth of expertise, there isn’t a safer pair of hands to help navigate the future of your business.
Datacom is Australasia's largest home-grown tech company. Drawing on the experience of over 6500 staff in 24 locations around the globe, we work with a full range of clients, from small start-ups through to government agencies and multinational corporations, to explore and extract the hidden value in their systems.
We bring together over half a century of know-how, the right technology and the knowledge and creativity of our people, to deliver sustainable solutions to our customers’ greatest challenges.
With our team of dedicated professionals, we work with leading partners to deliver the solutions that are right for our customers – that solve their issues and enhances their businesses.
We design, build and run IT systems and processes across operations, cybersecurity, cloud, digital platforms, payroll and enterprise applications. We deliver customer care services and operate mission-critical infrastructure with best-in-class data centre facilities – Datacom delivers on the promise: practical imagination.
