Position description
The McGill University Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, invites applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.
The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC)—a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.
The Department seeks a highly motivated academic ophthalmologist with advanced subspecialty expertise in uveitis and ocular inflammatory disease. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to academic excellence through clinical care, teaching, research, and scholarly activity.
Job Duties
The successful candidate will possess fellowship-level expertise in the comprehensive management of ocular inflammatory disease, including anterior, intermediate, posterior, and panuveitis. Particular emphasis will be placed on candidates whose primary clinical identity and expertise are centered in uveitis, rather than applicants with limited adjunctive exposure obtained through other subspecialty training pathways.
The incumbent will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in:
- advanced diagnostic evaluation and management of uveitic disease;
- ocular imaging and ocular ultrasonography relevant to ocular inflammation;
- systemic immunomodulatory and immunosuppressive therapy for ocular inflammatory disease.
The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the continued growth and advancement of a high-volume tertiary/quaternary uveitis service within the Department. A minimum of approximately 2 days per week of dedicated uveitis-focused clinical activity will be expected, with participation in shared clinical service responsibilities, including after-hours care, as appropriate.
In addition, the incumbent will be expected to actively participate in all core missions of an academic ophthalmology department, including:
- clinical care;
- undergraduate, postgraduate, and fellowship education;
- clinical and/or translational research;
- scholarly dissemination and academic leadership.
The successful candidate will also be expected to provide excellent clinical and surgical teaching and supervision to medical students, residents, and fellows, and will be expected to develop or participate in innovative scholarly initiatives and collaborative research activities. Development of an independent externally funded research program is encouraged.
Depending on the successful candidate’s training, clinical privileges, departmental needs, and institutional resources, the position may also include participation/collaboration in surgical management of uveitic disease and related ophthalmic conditions.
The successful applicant may also be required to contribute to departmental strategic initiatives related to innovative care delivery models, teleophthalmology, and improved access to subspecialty ophthalmic care for underserved populations.
Clinical resources, operating room access, laser allocation (if applicable), infrastructure support, clinical availability (if applicable) and scope of practice will be determined through applicable MUHC processes and according to institutional priorities, departmental needs, and available resources.
The incumbent will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements
Candidates must:
- Hold or be eligible for licensure in ophthalmology in the province of Quebec;
- Have completed recognized subspecialty fellowship training in uveitis and ocular inflammatory disease;
- Demonstrate expertise in the medical management of complex ocular inflammatory disease, including systemic immunomodulatory therapy;
- Demonstrate evidence of scholarly activity and/or clinical research productivity;
- Demonstrate strong potential for academic leadership, collaboration, innovation, and teaching excellence;
- Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
Additional advanced graduate training (e.g., MSc, MPH, PhD, or equivalent) is considered an asset.
