Risk Management and Insurance Specialist, Strategic Finance Office
Summary:
The risk management and insurance specialist supports the administration of the university’s insurance programs, claims activities, and operational risk management initiatives. This role analyzes operational risks across the institution, develops risk mitigation approaches, and supports the implementation of strategies that address identified exposures. Key responsibilities include coordinating insurance policy renewals, preparing underwriting information, supporting insurance claims, and monitoring self-insurance programs and insurance-related budgets. This position serves as a key liaison with the university’s primary insurer, external service providers, and internal stakeholders on insurance and risk-related matters. Additionally, the specialist supports contract review activities, loss prevention initiatives, reporting processes, and motor vehicle insurance administration while maintaining confidential insurance and claims records.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides risk analysis services and recommends solutions to address operational risk exposures across the institution.
Identifies operational risks and develops risk mitigation strategies and practical risk management solutions.
Coordinates insurance-related contractual obligations, legal matters, claims administration, and interactions with insurers, adjusters, and external legal counsel, in collaboration with legal office colleagues.
Advises colleges and units on insurance coverage, policy options, and risk considerations during contract negotiations.
Prepares insurance renewal applications and develops underwriting information for insurance policies and renewals.
Investigates, administers, and oversees insurance claims throughout the claims
Coordinates loss prevention inspections, communicates insurer requirements, and supports follow-up activities.
Reviews incident and accident reports and assesses potential liability exposures.
Completes post-loss recovery activities, including salvage, subrogation, demand letters, and release documentation.
Assists with the administration of the university’s self-insurance program and insurance premium budget activities.
Develops and communicates insurance claims reports and related insurance information.
Supports insurance claims reporting processes and maintains claims databases and records.
Produces waivers, informed consents, releases, and related guidance on document administration and retention requirements.
Apportions insurance premiums to university units, subsidiaries, and related entities.
Verifies and processes certificates of insurance and policy endorsement requests.
Creates, maintains, and completes insurance claim files, including proof of loss documentation.
Responds to inquiries regarding insurance coverage, insurance processes, and motor vehicle subrogation matters.
Assists with annual property value appraisal updates and motor vehicle registration renewal activities.
Serves as the university’s representative and primary contact with Canadian university insurance reciprocals.
Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.
Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement.

Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Minimum of two years of insurance-related work experience, including experience with insurance claims processes and insurance policy renewal processes, preferably within a university environment or large organization.
Experience with Canadian Universities Reciprocal Insurance Exchange (CURIE) operations and insurance services is an asset.
Demonstrated ability to build productive working relationships.
Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Effective planning, organization, prioritization, and time-management skills.
Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
