The position will be located in the Rehabilitation Counseling program, in the School for Global Inclusion and Social Development, and may require teaching courses for other counseling programs in the College. The candidate will assume a core faculty, non-tenure-track lecturer position, teaching in the Rehabilitation Counseling Master’s (CACREP accredited).
Teaching requirements of the position may be completed remotely, as the program has students in over 11 states. Courses are offered online, with weekly, synchronous class meetings in the evenings. Teaching assignments may vary depending on the needs of the program and college and will include a teaching load of eight courses across the fall and spring semesters. Teaching in the summer may be available for additional compensation.
The successful candidate will be required to:
Teach online courses in the Rehabilitation Counseling Masters’ programs (up to a total of eight graduate level counseling courses in the College)
Provide academic advisement to graduate students within the Rehabilitation Counseling program
Provide service to the Rehabilitation Counseling program, School, and College, including attendance at meetings.
Ideally, we seek candidates whose teaching and clinical/supervisory practices demonstrate an understanding of the impact of systemic and structural racism, ableism, and other forms of discrimination on mental health and well-being, as well as on prevention and intervention efforts, consistent with the University’s mission.
The applicant is also encouraged (but not required) to participate in research and grant-funded opportunities related to their professional areas of expertise.
Minimum Qualifications for the position:
An earned doctoral degree in counselor education, preferably from a CACREPaccredited program, or have a related doctoral degree.
Preference will be given to candidates who are or have:
Successful and engaged graduate teaching experience inclusive of social justice, critical pedagogy, and intersectional approaches to learning, including online learning formats.
Licensed or license eligible as a Rehabilitation Counselor or Mental Health Counselor.
Eligible to be Certified as a Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC).
A minimum of one year of clinical experience working with persons with disabilities including mental health disabilities.
The College of Education and Human Development is ranked the top public college of education in the state of Massachusetts (U.S. News and World Report, 2025) and is guided by our core values of social justice, community engagement and academic excellence.
UMass Boston is an urban public research university with a teaching soul, whose impact is both local and global. We are the third most diverse university in the country - more than 60% of our undergraduate students come from minoritized communities and groups and more than half of our students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Thus, our students come to us from richly diverse life experiences and backgrounds; they bring to our classrooms and research settings the robust range of perspectives growing out of the socio-cultural, economic, and historical contexts in which they have lived, along with the challenges they encounter, engage, and strive to overcome.
We invite applications from candidates who reflect the diverse life experiences of our student body, who appreciate that students bring their holistic selves into the academic setting, and who recognize and articulate how their own life experiences and backgrounds have shaped their journeys, practices, and commitments as researchers, scholars, and educators.
