CBC Toronto is looking for an experienced journalist to fill the key role of Assignment Producer.
Reporting to the Senior Producer of assignment, the Assignment Producer will help oversee CBC Toronto’s newsgathering resources, suggesting what stories to cover, when, how and by whom. They will also be responsible for chasing and coordinating breaking news.
The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of their decision-making, ensuring our assignment decisions connect our audiences to the news they need to know, when they need to know it. They have a strong sense of the stories that affect the lives of Torontonians and the issues that are resonating in their communities. They understand how critical smart and intentional newsgathering is to delivering storytelling and treatments that will grow new audiences on mobile and streaming platforms,
We are looking for someone who loves breaking news and is able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances during a busy news day. Excellent writing and chase abilities are essential. So is passion for everything that makes this city what it is - its people, its neighbourhoods, its culture, its politics, its business. The successful candidate needs to be someone deeply connected to communities across the GTA with a passion for sharing their stories.
This is a collaborative work environment, so a team player with first-rate communications skills is a must. This job requires someone who thrives in scenarios that require juggling and prioritizing multiple stories and tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
The position requires full-time, on-site presence at the Toronto Broadcast Centre.

Key tasks:
Identify stories that require newsgathering and anticipate how the audience might want to consume them.
Make quick editorial decisions under pressure in complex, time‑sensitive environments.
Chase and confirm breaking news.
Direct newsgathering teams.
Ensure that breaking news gets to the audience quickly and cohesively.
Coordinate with producers, reporters, on-air staff, writers, editors, videographers and other staff members.
Provide feedback and coaching to newsgathering staff to help them develop their skills and produce content of the highest quality.
We’re looking for a candidate with the following:
University degree in journalism or equivalent with at least five years of practical and relevant experience leading teams in a fast-paced, multiplatform news environment.
Extensive experience working in an assignment role.
Strong contributor of ideas, stories and treatments.
The ability to plan ahead and effectively organize news coverage for multiple platforms - and to react to breaking news as it arises and assign resources in collaboration with others at the regional and national level.
Passionate about exploring the diverse communities that make up the GTA and their stories, issues and ideas.
Proven track record of ensuring a diversity of voices is reflected in storytelling.
Knowledge of changing audience trends and best practices, CBC News standards.
Up-to-date contact network.
Knowledge of production methods in the field and newsroom.
Knowledge of and familiarity with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
High level of organization and productivity.
Strong and enthusiastic team player with good communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to motivate and coach teams and encourage creativity.
Initiative taker, with ability to be productive in individual and team settings.
