Full job description
Community Outreach Representative – Behavioral Health
Salary: $55,000–$58,000 per year Territory: Central & Western Virginia Work Setting: Remote / Field-Based Travel: 60–80% Job Type: Full-time
Build Relationships That Connect People to Treatment
Milestone Treatment Center is looking for a driven, outgoing, and relationship-focused Community Outreach Representative to grow our presence throughout Central and Western Virginia.
This is a field-based business development role for someone who would rather be out meeting people than sitting behind a desk.
You'll build relationships with hospitals, healthcare providers, therapists, behavioral health professionals, employers, EAPs, recovery organizations, and community partners who can connect individuals and families with Milestone's treatment programs.
Your goal is simple: build trusted relationships, expand our referral network, and generate qualified referrals to Milestone.
If you're energized by meeting new people, opening doors, building a territory, and turning professional relationships into long-term partnerships, we'd like to meet you.
What You'll Do
Build and grow a network of referral partners throughout your assigned territory.
Conduct regular face-to-face meetings with hospitals, physicians, therapists, behavioral health providers, EAPs, employers, recovery organizations, and community agencies.
Identify and pursue new referral and business-development opportunities.
Educate referral partners about Milestone's treatment programs, clinical services, and admissions process.
Develop relationships that generate consistent, qualified referrals.
Represent Milestone at networking events, conferences, health fairs, community functions, and professional events.
Deliver presentations, lunch-and-learns, CEU programs, and educational events for professional organizations and referral partners.
Maintain consistent contact with referral sources through in-person meetings, phone, email, and virtual communication.
Partner closely with our Admissions team to ensure smooth referral handoffs and excellent communication.
Manage your territory strategically by identifying high-value relationships, opportunities, and areas for growth.
Track meetings, activities, referrals, and opportunities within the company CRM.
Monitor territory performance, referral trends, and competitive activity.
Represent Milestone with professionalism, credibility, and integrity throughout the community.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for a relationship builder and business developer—not someone who wants to spend their day working from home.
While your home may be your office, your territory is where the job happens.
Successful candidates will be comfortable getting in the car, walking into organizations, introducing themselves, asking for meetings, following up consistently, and developing relationships over time.
You'll thrive in this position if you're:
Outgoing and comfortable meeting new people
Naturally skilled at building and maintaining relationships
Motivated by growth, activity, and measurable results
Comfortable opening doors and creating opportunities
Persistent without being overly aggressive
Highly organized and disciplined about follow-up
Comfortable working independently without constant supervision
Confident delivering presentations and educational programs
Adaptable, resilient, and comfortable with frequent travel
Passionate about helping individuals and families access behavioral health treatment
Qualifications
2+ years of business development, healthcare sales, physician liaison, community outreach, or behavioral healthcare marketing experience preferred.
Experience within substance use disorder treatment, behavioral health, mental health, healthcare, or related industries strongly preferred.
Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent professional experience.
Demonstrated ability to develop professional relationships and generate new business or referrals.
Strong networking, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
Excellent organizational and territory-management skills.
Ability to work independently in a remote, field-based environment.
Experience with CRM platforms; Salesforce experience is a plus.
Comfortable using Google Workspace and other business technology.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively throughout the assigned territory.
Territory & Travel
This is a 100% remote, field-based position covering Central and Western Virginia, with approximately 60–80% travel.
The majority of your time should be spent in the community meeting referral partners and developing your territory.
Relationship-building doesn't always happen between 9 and 5, so you'll also need flexibility to attend:
Evening networking and community events
Occasional weekend conferences and outreach events
Professional and educational programs
Overnight travel when business needs require
In return, you'll have significant autonomy to manage your territory, relationships, and schedule.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this position isn't measured by how many emails you send. It's measured by the relationships and referral business you build.
Strong Community Outreach Representatives consistently:
Develop new referral relationships
Strengthen and expand existing partnerships
Increase qualified referral volume
Maintain consistent face-to-face activity throughout their territory
Follow up and stay visible with referral partners
Meet established activity and performance goals
Identify new opportunities for territory growth
Build a strong professional reputation for Milestone within the community
Work closely with Admissions and Clinical teams to provide an excellent experience for referral partners and clients
Why Join Milestone?
At Milestone Treatment Center, you'll have the opportunity to build something.
You'll have ownership of your territory, the freedom to develop meaningful professional relationships, and the opportunity to see how the partnerships you create ultimately help individuals and families access treatment.
You'll also join a growing behavioral health organization where initiative, creativity, and results are noticed.
