This senior field role demands technical mastery, safety leadership, and a commitment to delivering reliable, energy-efficient controls solutions in commercial, institutional, and industrial environments.
Duties and Responsibilities
Independently diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex building automation systems, DDC controls, sensors, actuators, valves, and integration with HVAC equipment.
Perform advanced startups, functional testing, system balancing, calibration, and commissioning to verify performance and compliance with specifications.
Lead full service and retrofit calls from start to finish: assess on-site issues, communicate clearly with customers, coordinate parts and materials, execute work, and follow up for satisfaction.
Conduct preventive maintenance, system optimization, and energy-efficiency assessments to reduce downtime and improve performance.
Ensure all work complies with EPA regulations, building codes, manufacturer specifications, and Modigent safety and quality standards.
Document service activities thoroughly (work orders, reports, photos, as-builts, recommendations) and maintain accurate records.
Mentor and guide Controls Technician I and II team members by demonstrating advanced techniques, sharing best practices, and supporting on-the-job learning and safety adherence.
Maintain clean, organized work areas, vehicles, tools, and PPE; adhere to all safety protocols and company standards.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Yes – Provides coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to Controls Technicians I and II; may lead small crews or coordinate with other trades on complex jobs.
Requirements/Qualifications
Experience: 5+ years of progressive hands-on experience in building automation/controls installation, startup, troubleshooting, and service; proven journeyman-level proficiency in handling complex tasks independently.
Education: High school diploma or GED required; associate degree, trade school certificate, or technical training in HVAC, controls, electronics, or related field strongly preferred.
Certifications/Licenses: EPA Section 608 certification (Universal required); valid driver's license and clean driving record required; NATE certification or manufacturer-specific training preferred; OSHA 30-hour certification encouraged.
Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, rooftops, mechanical rooms, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, electrical hazards, and extreme temperatures; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and steel-toed boots at all times—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Frequent regional travel within assigned market or on-call rotations may be required as business needs dictate.
Required Skills
Advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across commercial controls and HVAC systems.
Proficiency with controls tools, gauges, multimeters, and specialized test equipment.
Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, sequences of operation, and technical documentation.
