The Chief Legal Officer serves as the organization’s top legal executive, providing strategic guidance, legal counsel, and risk management to support the organization’s mission, operations, and long-term goals. This role oversees all legal matters, ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations, manages legal risk, and acts as a key advisor to executive leadership and the board of directors.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as the principal legal advisor to the CEO, executive team, and board of directors
Provide legal oversight for corporate governance, compliance, contracts, labor and employment matters, intellectual property, litigation, and regulatory affairs
Develop and lead the organization’s legal strategy to promote and protect its interests.
Ensure organizational compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as industry-specific regulations
Draft, review, and negotiate high-level contracts, agreements, and legal documents.
Manage outside counsel relationships and legal budgets efficiently
Lead and develop the in-house legal team; provide mentoring and direction to legal staff.
Monitor changes in laws and regulations that affect the organization and advise leadership accordingly
Support risk management and crisis response planning in coordination with other departments
Maintain strong relationships with regulatory agencies and key stakeholders
QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; must be licensed and in good standing to practice law
Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible legal experience, including experience at the executive level
Strong background in corporate law, regulatory compliance, labor law, and contract negotiations
Exceptional judgment, strategic thinking, and decision-making skills
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities
Experience in healthcare and/or correctional setting preferred
Prior experience advising a board of directors or working in a highly regulated environment is preferred
FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS
Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests
May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays
On-call duty may be required (available to work on short notice)
