About the Role ALS Water have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Laboratory Manager to join our Canberra team.
The Assistant Lab Manager will play an important role supporting the Laboratory Manager in the day to day running of our Canberra lab. This role is ideal for someone with sound judgement and a focus on continuance improvement.
This is a 12-month fixed term contract, full-time position - Monday to Friday, flexible hours between 8:00am and 6:00pm
The day-to-day:
Support the Laboratory Manager in the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, including workflow prioritisation, turnaround time optimisation, and workload management
Manage staffing levels, cross-training, and resource planning to ensure efficient laboratory operations
Act as internal Project Manager for special projects as required
Provide technical support and timely communication to clients regarding analytical methods, holding time issues, and sample queries
Coordinate urgent work orders and facilitate load shedding in conjunction with the Sample Receipt Coordinator
Drive continuous improvement in productivity, efficiency, safety, and teamwork
Ensure compliance with HR, health, safety, and environmental practices, including recruitment, induction, performance management, and staff development
Assist with administrative coordination of the laboratory and act as Laboratory Manager in their absence
Ensure analytical data quality meets or exceeds company and market standards, supported by well-maintained laboratory equipment
Assess QA/QC audit outcomes and drive continuous improvement initiatives
Maintain a thorough understanding of ALS HSE policies and safety/environmental requirements, ensuring full compliance with company standards and current state OHS legislation
Provide a safe working environment through appropriate equipment, prompt reporting and rectification of compliance concerns, and leading a strong safety and sustainability culture
The Essentials:
Tertiary qualifications in science (preferably Chemistry), or a related field
5 years demonstrated laboratory experience
Experience in and ISO 17025 accredited laboratory
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
A strong customer focus
An understanding of basic business principles
Excellent computer literacy
Confidence and ability to use own initiative
Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
Demonstrated supervisory abilities
Responsive to organisational and team needs.
