Job Summary: The Controller leads the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the health center, reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This role oversees the accounting team and ensures accurate, timely financial reporting aligned with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), federal grant requirements (HRSA, Uniform Guidance), and healthcare regulations. The Controller also maintains robust internal controls and supports senior leadership with budget preparation and audits.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting & Financial Operations
Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring accurate and timely consolidated financial statements.
Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the accounting team (including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll functions).
Oversee daily cash management, banking reconciliations, and investment activities.
Manages grant accounting functions including monthly invoicing, federal draw downs, grant budgeting, general ledger reconciliations and compliance with grant requirements.
Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and prevent fraud.
Compliance & Reporting
Ensure strict compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including HRSA grant requirements and Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200).
Manage and prepare schedules for the annual financial audit and Single Audit.
Oversee the preparation and filing of Medicaid/Medicare cost reports and Uniform Data System (UDS) reports.
Coordinate the filing of IRS Form 990 and other required tax documents.
Budgeting & Analysis
· Assist the CFO in the preparation and consolidation of annual budgets and multi-year financial forecasts.
· Monitor operating results against budget and perform variance analysis, initiating corrective actions where necessary.
· Partner with clinical and operational leaders to educate them on financial procedures and support program operations.
Education, Training, License and Certification, Skills and Experience Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; Master's degree or MBA preferred.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) strongly preferred.
5+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, ideally in an FQHC, Community Health Center, or similar non-profit healthcare setting.
Strong, demonstrated understanding of FQHC reimbursement mechanisms, sliding fee scales, 340B drug pricing programs, and Medicaid/Medicare billing.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with QuickBooks and ADP.
Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial data for diverse staff, management, and the Board of Directors.
Demonstrated ability to embody and uphold Mazzoni Center’s core values: respect for people, patient/client focus, inclusivity and integrity in all aspects of work.
Participate in agency meetings, staff in-services, and external training as required.
Clearances:
Background checks are required, including Criminal Background Clearance, Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Clearance.
