The Independent Living Specialist manages a caseload of tenants to help them maintain housing stability through supportive counseling and resource referrals. They also conduct regular apartment visits to ensure compliance with safety and security guidelines.
Candidates must have a high school diploma/GED and at least three years of relevant experience working with mentally ill or substance abuse populations. A bachelor's degree and CPR certification are preferred or required.
Reporting to the Clinical Supervisor, the Independent Living Specialist is responsible for all aspects of an assigned caseload of tenants living in the program. Specific duties are focused around helping tenants maintain housing stability and include assisting with applications and re-certification for entitlements; providing linkages and referrals to community resources such as vocational, medical, mental health, and/or substance abuse services; and providing supportive counseling. The Independent Living Specialist will also make regular visits to tenant apartments to ensure a safe and secure environment in compliance with guidelines.
Full-time, 37.5 hours per week
BA preferred. At least three years relevant experience and HS diploma/ GED required. Experience working with the substance abuse and/or mentally ill population required. Basic computer literacy required. CPR training certification or willingness to take training class in CPR.

The Way Home for New Yorkers Experiencing Homelessness
BRC is one of New York City's largest providers of housing and services for individuals experiencing homelessness. Founded in 1971 by a group of recovering alcoholics living in poverty in the Bowery’s infamous flophouses, these individuals had hope, and a firm belief that better days lay ahead. BRC serves nearly 13,000 individuals each year, operating more than 30 programs throughout the greater metropolitan area. The organization’s robust continuum of housing and services includes over 3,700 units of transitional and permanent housing; outreach and case management programs; and substance use and medical services. Together, these programs offer a caring and effective path from homelessness to home, providing comprehensive services that guide everyone on their unique journey.
