Zoo Maintenance Worker Assistant
Milwaukee County Zoo
Hourly pay range: $17.50 - $20.00
Closing Date: 07/07/2026 or upon receipt of the first 50 applicants
Job Summary: The Zoo Maintenance Worker Assistant will assist with maintenance and repairs of the buildings, equipment, and grounds of the zoo. This position performs a wide range of entry level maintenance tasks to assist other Zoo Maintenance Workers. The Zoo Maintenance Worker Assistant will also help with skilled trades when needed.
Job Responsibilities:
Under the guidance of the Maintenance Manager or Maintenance Workers, repair and maintain zoo structures and equipment, and help build props inside animal exhibits.
Install weather stripping for doors and windows. Caulk windows and buildings to increase energy efficiency.
Perform basic painting of structures and equipment both indoors and outdoors.
Assist the Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Workers, and skilled trades as needed.
Assist the System Control Coordinator take meter readings. Perform basic data entry into Cityworks.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Current resident of Wisconsin.
Possession of a Wisconsin Driver’s License at the time of hire, able to be maintained throughout employment.
Possession of a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
Able to lift/carry and push/pull up to 50lbs.
Willing to work irregular hours with overtime, weekends, or shift rotation.
Basic knowledge of Outlook, Learning Management Systems, and Spreadsheets.
Preferred Experience:
Mechanical background or previous experience.
Technical training in maintenance or trade from high school or a technical college.
Maintenance experience.
NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the state of Wisconsin at the time of application. In accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
