UVA Tribal Relations is seeking a graduate student worker to serve as an assistant during the Fall 2026 semester. Student workers in Tribal Relations will gain practical experience in the field of higher education administration and community relations, especially as it pertains to State and Federal Tribal Nations engagement. This position will utilize best practices for fostering collaborative and respectful partnerships across multiple stakeholders: students, staff, faculty, alumni, community members, institutional partners, and Tribal governments and citizens. At the direction of the Tribal Liaison, the student worker will engage in planning public events, community outreach, facilitating communication, research, and attending local conferences. There may be opportunities for co-organizing a program or leading a personal initiative, but office needs will take precedent.
The worker will support UVA’s Tribal Liaison within the following areas:
Community outreach booths
Program planning and event coordination
Communication between internal and external partners
Providing input and recommendations on relevant conversations with partner organizations and institutions
Participate in virtual and in-person meetings
Attending local conferences and learning opportunities
Conducting research that advances work toward a Tribal Consultation Policy
Assisting with administrative tasks
Participating in public speaking opportunities
Responsibilities may change depending on evolving priorities of office and community needs.
This position is expected to work about 10 hours per week for up to 14 weeks.
Pay rate: $17.25 + mileage reimbursement for travel (2026 IRS Standard Mileage Rate)

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Registered as a graduate student. Experience:
Demonstrated interest in or experience participating in, supporting, or leading cultural education, community engagement, or programs that foster connection across different backgrounds.
Basic knowledge with navigating Tribal administrations, Tribal led organizations, and related resources.
Demonstrated interest in building positive connections and working relations between Tribal administrations & communities and institutions of higher education.
Basic understanding/experience with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams) and Zoom.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and ability to create a welcoming environment.
Access to reliable transportation
The ideal candidate should demonstrate flexibility and an ability to navigate ambiguity in an inaugural role.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
May require occasional lifting, carrying, and setup of portable tables, chairs, tents, and boxes both on and off Grounds.
