Maintenance Technician 

Welding and Pipefitting

Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician , Welding and Pipefitting, is a skilled maintenance position primarily responsible for welding, pipefitting, metal fabrication, and the installation, modification, and repair of plant piping and production equipment.

Approximately 70% of this position’s work will involve welding, pipefitting, and fabrication, with the remaining 30% supporting mechanical repairs, equipment installation, preventive maintenance, and other general maintenance activities.

This position will work closely with experienced maintenance personnel to strengthen the plant’s internal welding and fabrication capabilities, develop proficiency with plant-specific piping and equipment, and provide dependable support for daily operations, projects, and shutdown activities.

Primary Work Allocation

Welding, Pipefitting, and Fabrication: Approximately 70%

• Carbon steel and stainless steel welding

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Other duties may be assigned based on operational and maintenance needs.

Welding, Pipefitting, and Fabrication

• Perform welding, pipefitting, cutting, fitting, and metal fabrication to support production equipment, utility systems, process piping, facility systems, capital projects, and equipment improvements.
• Weld carbon steel and stainless steel piping, fittings, supports, structural components, equipment parts, and fabricated assemblies.
• Perform welding using applicable processes based on the material, equipment, and job requirements.
• Operate welding machines, cutting torches, plasma cutters, grinders, saws, pipe preparation tools, and other fabrication equipment.
• Measure, cut, bevel, fit, align, tack, and weld piping and fabricated components.
• Lay out and assemble piping systems using drawings, field measurements, established reference points, and job requirements.
• Install, modify, and repair process piping, utility piping, pipe supports, equipment connections, and related components.
• Remove damaged or obsolete piping and install replacement piping, valves, fittings, flanges, gaskets, and supports.
• Fabricate brackets, guards, platforms, equipment supports, pipe supports, and other components as needed.
• Perform field fitting and fabrication when existing conditions differ from drawings or planned dimensions.
• Verify proper fit-up, alignment, orientation, slope, clearance, and support before completing welded or mechanical connections.
• Inspect completed work for visible defects, proper alignment, workmanship, and conformance with job requirements.
• Identify welding or piping conditions that require additional evaluation, specialized procedures, inspection, or outside support.
• Assist with pressure testing, leak testing, flushing, cleaning, and returning repaired or installed piping systems to service.
• Protect adjacent equipment, instrumentation, wiring, insulation, and building components during welding and fabrication activities.
• Maintain welding machines, leads, grounds, torches, regulators, hoses, fabrication tools, and related equipment in safe operating condition.
• Maintain organized welding supplies, consumables, filler materials, fittings, and fabrication materials.
• Support welding and pipefitting activities during planned shutdowns, equipment installations, emergency repairs, and plant projects.
• Work alongside experienced maintenance welders and other skilled personnel to learn plant-specific equipment, piping systems, materials, practices, and repair requirements.
• Develop the ability to independently plan and complete routine welding, pipefitting, and fabrication assignments.

Mechanical and General Maintenance

• Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on production equipment, facility equipment, and plant utility systems.
• Troubleshoot and repair industrial machinery and equipment using drawings, schematics, equipment information, diagnostic instruments, feedback devices, maintenance history, and other available technical resources.
• Inspect and test machinery to identify mechanical problems, leaks, unusual sounds, excessive vibration, abnormal temperatures, and other indications of equipment malfunction.
• Communicate with operators, supervisors, Maintenance, Engineering, equipment manufacturers, and vendors to understand equipment conditions and diagnose problems efficiently.
• Coordinate with Engineering when appropriate to reduce troubleshooting time, evaluate equipment problems, and determine reliable corrective actions.
• Dismantle defective machinery and install new, repaired, or rebuilt parts.
• Clean, lubricate, adjust, and replace bearings, shafts, seals, gears, chains, belts, couplings, and other machinery components.
• Repair and maintain centrifugal and positive-displacement pumps.
• Remove and install motors, gearboxes, pumps, valves, agitators, piping components, and related equipment.
• Install and repair mechanical and electrical components of machinery within the employee’s demonstrated qualifications, training, and authorization.
• Repair and replace valves, gauges, pressure regulators, actuators, piping components, and related equipment.
• Assist with hydraulic, pneumatic, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and facility maintenance when needed.
• Participate in equipment installations, equipment modifications, commissioning activities, startup support, and plant improvement projects.
• Perform emergency repairs and respond to changing plant and production priorities.
• Support general maintenance assignments when welding and pipefitting work is not the immediate priority.

Equipment Installation and Improvement

• Assist with the layout, assembly, installation, modification, and startup of new or upgraded production equipment.
• Read and interpret mechanical drawings, piping drawings, fabrication drawings, electrical schematics, equipment manuals, and blueprints.
• Take field measurements and help determine material, fitting, tooling, and labor requirements for assigned work.
• Identify opportunities to improve equipment safety, reliability, accessibility, and maintainability.
• Assist with developing practical repair plans for piping, structures, and equipment components.
• Communicate material needs, equipment needs, job hazards, access limitations, and anticipated work requirements before beginning assigned tasks.
• Support continuous-improvement projects and plant reliability initiatives.

Safety and Compliance

• Perform all welding, pipefitting, fabrication, and maintenance work in accordance with company policies, established procedures, and applicable safety requirements.
• Follow all applicable requirements for lockout/tagout, hot work, line breaking, confined-space entry, electrical safety, fall protection, mobile-equipment operation, and chemical handling.
• Obtain required permits and verify that appropriate precautions are in place before beginning hot work, line-breaking work, or other permitted activities.
• Inspect the work area for combustible materials, chemical hazards, process hazards, and equipment that could be affected by heat, sparks, slag, or cutting operations.
• Use welding screens, fire-resistant coverings, ventilation, fire watches, and other protective measures as required.
• Verify that piping and equipment have been properly isolated, depressurized, drained, cleaned, or otherwise prepared before beginning work.
• Properly identify hazards and apply required control measures before starting an assignment.
• Use required personal protective equipment and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Stop work and notify supervision when job conditions differ from the work plan or when an uncontrolled hazard is identified.
• Immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment damage, chemical releases, environmental concerns, incidents, and near misses.
• Participate in safety meetings, training, inspections, job planning, and continuous-improvement activities.

Documentation and Communication

• Document completed repairs, inspections, equipment conditions, measurements, modifications, parts used, and recommended follow-up work.
• Accurately complete work orders and other maintenance records.
• Communicate equipment status, job progress, material needs, delays, safety concerns, and recommended corrective actions to the Maintenance Manager.
• Provide clear work handoffs when an assignment continues across shifts or requires follow-up by another employee.
• Coordinate effectively with Maintenance, Production, Engineering, EHS, Quality, contractors, and other departments.
• Share welding, fabrication, pipefitting, and equipment knowledge with other maintenance personnel.
• Accept instruction and technical guidance from experienced maintenance personnel while developing plant-specific skills.
• Work independently after demonstrating the knowledge and ability required for an assigned task.

Mobile Equipment and Work Platforms

• Operate forklifts, telescopic boom lifts, scissor lifts, and other authorized mobile equipment or aerial work platforms to position materials, move equipment, and access elevated work areas.
• Operate mobile equipment only after completing required training and receiving company authorization.
• Perform required pre-use inspections and report damaged or unsafe equipment.
• Use approved rigging, lifting, and material-handling practices when positioning piping, fabricated components, machinery, and supplies.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Practical welding and metal-fabrication experience.
• Ability to weld or develop qualification in carbon steel and stainless steel applications.
• Knowledge of pipefitting fundamentals, including measuring, cutting, fitting, alignment, flanges, fittings, valves, gaskets, and pipe supports.
• Ability to safely operate welding equipment, cutting equipment, grinders, saws, and common fabrication tools.
• Ability to read or develop proficiency in reading fabrication drawings, piping drawings, mechanical drawings, blueprints, and equipment manuals.
• Strong mechanical aptitude.
• Ability to use tape measures, levels, squares, calipers, and other measuring tools accurately.
• Ability to recognize acceptable fit-up, alignment, and general welding workmanship.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Willingness to learn from experienced maintenance welders and other skilled maintenance personnel.
• Ability to follow written work instructions, safety procedures, permits, and equipment-isolation requirements.
• Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and support emergency maintenance needs.
• Ability to work in an industrial production environment.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Physical Demands

• Regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb stairs or ladders.
• Work in awkward positions while fitting, welding, or repairing piping and equipment.
• Regularly use hands and arms to operate welding equipment, fabrication tools, hand tools, and power tools.
• Lift, carry, push, pull, or move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Handle pipe, fittings, welding leads, tools, rigging, and fabricated components.
• Work at elevated locations while using required fall-protection equipment.
• Work in confined or restricted spaces when properly trained, authorized, and permitted.
• Wear required personal protective equipment, including welding helmets, safety glasses, face shields, hearing protection, gloves, protective footwear, flame-resistant clothing, chemical-resistant clothing, respiratory protection, and fall-protection equipment when applicable.
• Perform work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.

Work Environment

The employee may be exposed to:
