We are seeking a Lab Manager who will serve as INBT’s primary responder for laboratory facilities failures, incidents, and compliance findings, coordinating Facilities, vendors, and institutional compliance offices, and documenting incidents for risk management and insurance purposes. Reports to the Senior Administrator of INBT. Responsible for the overall operational elements of INBT core faculty laboratories under the general supervision of faculty researchers and coordinates a distributed network of laboratory captains designated by each Principal Investigator, without direct line authority.
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for facilities planning, utilization, coordination and repair response, safety and regulatory compliance readiness, equipment certification and service coordination, procurement, and inventory management across INBT core faculty laboratories. The position does not conduct bench research and does not supervise full-time employees. The Laboratory Manager exercises independent judgment in setting priorities across 18 faculty groups with competing operational needs
We are seeking a Laboratory Manager responsible for the laboratory operations, facilities, and safety compliance activities of the Institute for NanoBioTechnology (INBT). The Laboratory Manager serves as laboratory manager for all core INBT faculty. INBT’s 18 core faculty are distributed across multiple departments within the Whiting School of Engineering and beyond; this position is the single point of laboratory operations management for that cohort, with primary focus on the research laboratories and shared facilities located in Croft Hall.
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the scientific and administrative activities of one or more related laboratories. The Laboratory Manager applies extensive knowledge of the laboratory's research interests to meet the overall objectives. Partners with Principal Investigators (PIs) to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Develop, design, conduct, and manage research projects.
Coordinate own objectives and those of laboratory team members.
Supervise data collection and verification using related specialized skills and knowledge.
Manage staff including involvement in training, oversight, hiring, and performance management.
Serve as a resource for all faculty, learners, and staff working in the laboratory.
Responsible for facility-related issues and management of projects, e.g., lab renovations, equipment purchases, work with contractors, associated costs, etc.
Approve significant grant expenditures and approve significant equipment purchases in collaboration with PI(s) and finance staff.
Create and implement new protocols, oversee assay validations in conjunction with PI(s).
Responsible for overall operational elements of laboratory under general supervision of faculty researchers.
Responsible for systems used to track and analyze results.
Other duties as assigned.
In addition to the duties described above
Coordination of the Laboratory Captain Network: Lead and coordinate laboratory operations across INBT by managing the network of laboratory captains, standardizing procedures and documentation, facilitating institute-wide operational activities, and serving as the primary resource for laboratory management and space-related issues.
Space Planning and Utilization Lead INBT laboratory space planning and infrastructure management by optimizing space utilization, supporting faculty growth and research needs, coordinating laboratory moves and renovations, and developing strategic plans for current and future space requirements.
Facilities Coordination, Repairs, and Incident Response Serve as INBT’s lead for laboratory facilities and infrastructure operations, coordinating maintenance, emergency response, shared research resources, capital improvements, and continuity planning to ensure reliable and uninterrupted research activities.
Safety, Inspection Readiness, and Regulatory Compliance Serve as the primary laboratory safety and compliance lead for INBT, overseeing regulatory compliance, inspections, safety programs, training, incident management, hazardous materials oversight, and coordination with institutional safety and compliance offices.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Five years of related experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Supervisory or lead experience in a laboratory.
Master’s degree in science or engineering; or a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related engineering or physical science field.
Experience managing laboratory operations for multiple investigators or in a shared, multi-user research environment.
Experience in an academic research environment or higher education setting.
Experience with laboratory space planning, renovation projects, laboratory moves, or facilities improvement projects.
Experience serving as a laboratory or departmental safety officer, or leading inspection readiness and remediation.
Experience coordinating equipment certification programs, including biological safety cabinets and chemical fume hoods.
Experience with chemical inventory management, hazardous waste coordination, and laboratory safety programs.
Supervisory, lead, or coordination experience in a laboratory or facilities setting.
Familiarity with biological, biochemical, chemical, materials, or nanotechnology laboratory environments.
