Description
The Mechanic/Fleet Technician at Francis Parker School (Parker) is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and safe operation of the school's fleet of buses, vans, and other support vehicles. This position ensures that all vehicles in the fleet comply with applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations, maximizing fleet reliability and minimizing downtime. As Parker transitions from diesel-powered buses to electric buses over the next 5 to 10 years, the Mechanic/Fleet Technician will also play a key role in managing the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and fleet in accordance with industry-leading practices.
Requirements
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Diagnostic and Repairs: Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, including diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems (air and hydraulic), steering, suspension, and HVAC units.
Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine preventive maintenance (PM) inspections, oil changes, fluid checks, tire rotations, and safety audits as scheduled or required by law.
Safety Compliance: Ensure all buses pass state-mandated safety inspections (e.g., DOT/CHP regulations). Promptly address any defects that could compromise student safety.
Roadside Assistance: Respond to roadside calls and breakdowns to perform emergency field repairs or arrange towing.
Documentation: Maintain meticulous, accurate records of all repairs, parts used, maintenance schedules, and inspections using physical logs or fleet management software.
Shop Safety: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment. Adhere strictly to OSHA standards and proper disposal procedures for hazardous waste materials.
Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent. A technical school degree or completion of a diesel mechanic apprenticeship program is preferred.
Experience: 5+ years of professional experience maintaining heavy-duty diesel engines and/or medium/heavy-duty trucks or buses.
Certifications: * ASE Certifications (Medium/Heavy Truck or School Bus series), as well as brake inspector and EPA Section 609 (A/C) certifications, are desirable.
License Requirements: Must possess a valid State of California Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements to test-drive and transport vehicles. A valid Class A CDL license is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Technical Proficiencies:
Thorough knowledge of diesel engine systems and heavy-duty vehicle maintenance.
Proficient with computerized diagnostic equipment.
Ability to read and interpret schematic/wiring diagrams.
Ability to safely use the comprehensive set of tools required for heavy-duty diesel repairs.
Familiarity with regulations, inspection requirements, environmental standards, and safety procedures applicable to school buses.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Ability to lift to 75 lbs.
Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and crawl to work on vehicles.
Ability to distinguish colors used in electrical wiring and diagnostic indicators.
Ability to perform work in a maintenance shop or outdoors.
